JEAN LANDES AND HENRY LANDES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
UMBRELLA-STICK AND CANE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 12, 1905.
Application filed March 14, 1905. -Serial No. 249,980.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JEAN LANDES and HENRY LANDES, citizens of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in UmbrellarSticks, Canes, and the Like, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the 'art to which it appertains to makeand use the same.
This invention relates to umbrella-sticks, canes, and the like; and the object thereof is to provide the handle of a device of this class with receptacles for carrying small coin, matches, or similar articles.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of our improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a side view of the handle portion of the stick of an umbrella provided with our improvement; Fig. 2, a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 2; Fig. 3,.a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4L a section on the line 4 4 ofFig. 3.
In the drawings forming part of this specification we have shown at a the handle portion of a stick of an umbrella, or the part a may be considered as the handle portion of an ordinary walking-cane, and this handle por tion of the stick of an umbrella or walkingcane is provided at its end in the form of con-' struction shown with an angular extension or, on which is mounted a tubular box or casing I), which may be secured thereto in any desired manner. box or casing 5 is closed, and said box or casing is provided with a central vertical partition 6 and the top side portions thereof are formed into longitudinal doors a, which are hinged at the opposite sides, as shown at 0 and said doors are provided in the form of construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and at their free edges with interlocking knobs 0 by which they are held together when closed, these interlocking knobs 0 being similar to those employed on pocket-books and similar articles. The partition Z2 divides the box or The outer end of the tubular other is intended as a match-box, or said lastnamed chamber may be used as a pin-receptacle or as a receptacle for other small articles designed for ladies use.
In Figs. 3 and 4 we have shown a modified form of fastening device for the doors 0, and this fastening device consists of a spring 6, secured to the inner side of one of the end portions of one of the doors and provided at its free end, which extends transversely of the closed end portion of the opposite door, with a V-shaped head 6 adapted to enter a corresponding recess a in the closed end portion of the last-named door, and the shape of the head 0 is such that when the doors 0 are swung together or closed the head 6 will enter the recess e and lock the doors in a closed position, and the doors may be opened by pressing on a button f, provided with a shank, which passes through the closed end portion of one of the doors and which is connected with or bears on the spring 6.
The box or casing may be provided with more than two receptacles or chambers, if desired, and we thus provide means whereby small coins may be conveniently carried when an umbrella or cane is carried and which may be easily got at without the necessity of reaching into a pocket or opening a hand-bag or similar device, and in the case of smokers matches may also be conveniently carried and easily got at in the same manner, while a lady carrying an umbrella or parasol provided with our improvement may conveniently carry pins, hair-pins, and other small toilet articles in one of the chambers or receptacles within the box or casing 6.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An umbrella-stick, walking-cane or the like, the handle of which is provided with a cylindrical box or casing which forms a part thereof, said box or casing being provided with alongitudinal and vertical partition and the top side portions thereof being formed into doors which are hinged at the opposite sides of the box or casing, and means for holding said doors in a closed position, substantially as shown and described.
