To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that l, FRANK Gr. ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Staffordsville, in the county of Giles and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Copy and Paper Holders for Writing; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

To render it easy for the pupil in learning to write from copy, I have produced an improved copy-holder which is also a holder for the sheet of paper being written upon; and the object of my improvement is to hold the copy and the writing-sheet in the same holder, each movable independent of the other with the copy at the surface to be written upon, and thereby keep the copy and the writing in the field of vision, rendering it easier for the pupil to reproduce the copy, and in the claims appended hereto I will set out the precise improvement, in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows in perspective my improved copy-holder and the sheet to be written upon held thereby in relative position with the copy. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same transversely of the holder. Fig. 3 shows the device in perspective with the copy-holder member raised in position to allow of the removal of the copy-slip from and its replacement by another upon said holder. Fig. 4c is a crosssection of the copy-holder in the position it occupies in Fig. 3 in effecting the removal and replacement of a copy-slip. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section ofthe copy-holder in the position it occupies in Fig. 1 and taken on the line a b of Fig. 2.

The copy-holder has a flat base 1, upon which an oblong box 2 is mounted for containing a pack of copy-slips 3. The base extends in front of the box a distance to support a copyholder, and at each end the base this extension 4: has vertical sides 5 5, which extend from the front of the box to the front edge of the base, the upper edges 6 6 of said raised sides inclining from the front wall of the box and terminating at the front edge of the base. Between and in these base sides at their upper edges is mounted a rod 7, on which is freely supported or hinged a plate 8, which terminates in an upward return-lip 9, preferably a little in advance of the front edge of the base, and is capable of vertical movement between the base sides. The upper hinged edge of this plate terminates in a frontward return-lip 10, and these lips form guideways or grooves for holding the copy-slip upon the hinged plate. It is important to note in connection with these guide-forming lips that the copy-holding plate in its normal position is below the upper inclined edges of the raised ends of the base, and therefore form closed ends to the ends of the guide-grooves to confine the copy-slip upon its carrying-plate. A spring 11, coiled upon the rod, bears against the front side of the box and against a vertical extension 12 of the copy-holding plate, whereby to maintain the front edge of the lat- {)er under pressure upon the front edge of the ase.

Looking at Fig. :2, it is seen that the copyslip-holding box is raised above its base-supporting plate and that the paper 13 to be written upon is passed upon the base beneath the bottom of the box and beneath the front edge of the hinged copy-holding plate, so that the latter, being under pressure, clamps the paper upon the front edge of the base. To render this clamping function effective, the edge of the copy-holding plate may overhang slightly the front edge of the base, so that the spring, acting by torsion upon the copyholding plate, gives a sort of gripping function upon the paper to hold it in proper relation to the copy while being written upon; but this clamping function of the copy-holder upon the paper on which the pupil is Writing does not interfere with the free adjustment of the copy-holder up or down upon the paper as each line is written or the feed adjustment of the paper up or down within the copy-holder as each line is written and in either adjustment the clamp gives the advantage of keeping the copy-holder in its proper relation to the paper, while the inner vertical walls of the base sides form guides between which the paper is kept in true relation to the copyholder, so that the lines of writing shall be parallel. The copy-slip contains the words to be copied, and its length is the width of the paper to be written upon and the length of the base is equal to the width of the base between the vertical sides of which the practicesheet is feedable, and for this purpose the device is used with separate practice-sheets, and this gives the advantage of turning the sheet over when one side is filled to write on its other side.

The writing may be begun at either top or at the bottom, preferably at the top, and when a line is written the pupil, taking hold of the box and pressing back the thumb-plate, raises the copy-holding plate and releases its clamp on the sheet of paper and while so raised the box may be moved downward the distance between the lines over the written line without blotting it, as the upward angle of the copyholder provides a space between it and the written line over which the bottom of the copy-holder and the box will pass withoutcontact. The box, however, maybe moved upward on the sheet as each line is written.

I claim- 1. A copy and paper holder comprising a base for the sheet to be written upon, a plate pivoted upon and above the base and provided with guideways or grooves, a copy-slip confined within said grooves, the front edge of said plate resting upon the base, and a spring engaging said plate for giving it a clamping function at the edge of the base.

2. A copy and paper holder comprising a base for the sheet 'to be written upon, and having raised sides, a rod mounted in said raised sides, a plate loosely hung on said rod and having guideways or grooves, a copy-slip confined within said grooves, the front edge of said plate resting upon the base, and a spring on said rod for giving said plate a clamping function at the edge of the base.

3. A copy and paper holder having a base for the sheet to be written upon, a copy-holding box mounted upon said base with a space between it and the bottom of the box, a plate pivoted upon and above the base and provided with guideways or grooves, a copy-slip confined within said grooves, the front edge of said plate terminating in advance of the front edge of the base, and a spring on said rod engaging said plate for giving it a clamping function at the edge of the base.

4. A copy and paper holder having a base for the sheet to be written upon, a copy-holding box mounted upon the base, and a spring pressed copy-holder pivotally mounted upon the base in front said box and having its front edge terminating with a clamping function at the front edge of the base, the said base having raised sides supporting the box and the copy-holder to form a free way and guide for the sheet to be written upon.

5. F or teaching penmanship, a base, a copy-holding box, a pivotally-mounted copyholding plate in front of said box, both mounted to leave a clear guideway above the base for the sheet to be written upon and the said copy-holding plate terminating with a clamping function at the front edge of the base.

6. A copy and paper holder comprising a copy-holding box, a pivotally-mounted copy holder in front of said box, both mounted above the base to form a holding-space for the sheet to be written upon, the said copyholding plate terminating in advance of the front edge of the base, and means for causing the copy-holder to have a clamping function at the edge of the base.

7. A copy and paper holder comprising a base for ,the sheet to be written upon and having raised sides, a plate hinged to and between said raised sides and provided with guideways or grooves and a copy-slip within said guideways, the said raised sides normally closing the ends of said guideways and confining the copy-slip between said raised sides, and means for clamping the edge of said plate upon the sheet being written upon.
