Be it known that we, Amos M. ALEE and ELMER J. HAGREEN, citizens of the United States, residing at Rochester, inthe county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and usefuly Improvements in Desk Pads, of which the followingr is a specification. f f

The object of this invention is to provide a new and improved form ofy desk pad.

This and other objectswill be fully illustrated in the drawings, described in the' specification, and pointed out in the claims at the end thereof.

In the drawing, referencejnumeral 1 indicates the base of the pad which isr covered on the bottom with a suitable substance that willl act as a cushion,4 [and hold the pad against sliding, a sheet of corrugated rubber being preferably used` for this purpose. Extending up from* the base are the sides 3 and 4 as Well as the ends 5 and 6. The end 6 forms part of a semi-cylindrical receptacle 7 as shown at the left of :Figure 3. The inclined top is provided which slopes from the upper end of the end 6 to the up'- per end of the end 5. l l

The end 5, inclined top 8, and semi-cyl1ndrical receptacle 7, of which the end 6 f orins part thereof, is preferably formed of asingle sheet of metal bent to the desired form. The sides 3 and 4 are attached to the inclined top 8 and are bent downtherefrom and are suitably fastened to the base 1. The free space between the top 8 and the base 1` may be filled with any desirable substance to Weight the pad and hold it in place on the desk.

On top of the semi-cylindrical receptacle T is hinged the semi-cylindrical cover plate 9 4which completes the cylindrical receptacle into Which a paper roll 25 is adapted to be placed. The cover plate 9 is provided with a iange 10 on the free end thereof, which flange rests on the top 8 when the c over is in its closed position. The cylindr1cal-re of a modified ceptacle is closed on the ends by the circular end `*plates 11 and forming part the sides 3 and 4. v

As heretofore pointed out', the cylindrical i receptacle .is adapted to hold a roll of paper suitable for Writing, which roll is held loosely in place therein by reason ofits own Weight..y For this purpose the cover may be raised and a roll of paper 25 may be placed therein and the loose end thereof may be drawvnout onthe top 8. then swung into 3 and is held iny that position by thespring;

y (ln the lower-end of the top 8 is provided a sliding plate15 which extends acrossthe paper and hafslthe flanges 16 and 17 turned down on the .ends thereof. The bottomof these anges is turnedin as indicated at 18 and 19 to engage into the longitudinal slots `2O and 21 in the sides 3 and 4 respectively. By these flanges 'and their engagement with the sides andj4, the plate 15 is held in a .suitable position above kthe top 8y withthe end of thepaperf-web placed betiv'eenthe plateandthe top.

rfhe slots 2()` and 21 extend horizontally in the sides 3 and 4 and guide the plate 15 'in a; horizontal movement. normally held in the position shown in F ig ure 2 by the springs 22 and 22A which are connected to lugsforined on the sides 3 and 4. at the left, and to the flanges 17 and 18 at the right.k By the tension of these springs the plate 15 is normallyY held in position as shown in Figure' 2 and in this position the forward edge of the plate 15 bears suffi- Web in position thereon.

The'end'of the top plate 8 is cut away at the right as indicated in dotted lines at 23 so as to expose the underside of the paper to the linger ofthe operator. This enables the operator to place his finger on the under side of the end of the paper web and his thumb on top of the plate 15 so that he can ciently against the top 8 to hold a papery The plate 15 is` draw the paper andthe plate together to the position illustrated in Figure 3. 0n the release: of the plate 15 and the end of the paper Webthe plate returns to its normal position shown in Figures 1 and 2, leaving the end of the paper vpulled out with 'the plate 15 exposed. In a desk pad7 the combination of a receptacle, a Writing table formed at one end of said receptacle,-saidreceptacle having a pocket iormed therein to receive a roll of paper from' which a continuons Web of paper may be drawn over said Writing table, horizontally v movable clamping means at the free end kof said Writing table, said clamping means being adapted to move away from said table` said clamping means being adapted to holdthe free end of the paper web against 'said Writing table and permit the `end of the paper web to move away from said Writing table with said' clamping means on the operation of said clamping means.
