To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ETHELMER ELLswoRTH MAGEE, of Waynesville, in the county of Haywood and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and Improved Writing-Tablet, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention relates to educational appliances; and its object is to provide a new and improved writing-tablet more especially de' signed to supersede the copy-books now in use in schools and arranged to enable a pupil to copy only perfect work and without wasting any paper.

The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claim.

A practical embodiment of my invention is represented by the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement with parts in position ready for use. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the improvement folded up.

The improved writing tablet and copyholder is provided with a tablet A of pasteboard or other suitable material and of adesired size to properly support the practicepaper. Across the tablet A and near the upper end thereof extends a copy-holder B, preferably made in the form of a box, having a lid 13 and adapted to contain the copies 0, from which a scholar is to work. The sides of the box are formed with extensions B hung on pivots D, secured in the sides of the tablet A, the extensions being adapted to rest on pins E, likewise secured in the sides of the tablet for holding the copy holder in an inclined position, as illustrated in Fig. 2, the bottom corner of the box being slightly above the top surface of the tablet to permit of pushing the practice-paper transversely on the tablet under the copy-holder. The copyholder Bis further provided with a support B for the edge and side of the copy to hold the latter securely in position on the front of the holder-that is, extending overthe lid B of the'boX, so that the copy appears in an inclined position in front of the tablet.

Then the several parts are in the position shown in Fig. 2 and a copy is placed in position in the support B and rests on the lid 13' and the sheet of practice-paper is on the tablet with the upper line close to the holderB, then the pupil can readily write the matter from the copy upon the sheet of practicepaper, and when the line is completed the pupil shifts the practicepaper longitudinally to pass the written line under the copy-holder, so as to be completely out of sight of the scholar,and a vacant or unused line is brought in close proximity to the copy-holder for the pupil to start a new line without being able to see the previously-written line. This is very important, as the pupil is not liable to recopya mistake previously made. Thus the pupil copies only the perfect work of said copy, avoiding thereby the tendency torepeat a mistake. Furthermore, the copy can be readily removed and replaced by another, so that the pupil can use the same practicepaper, if necessary, and write thereon the matter of several copies.

It is understood that with copy-books as now used a scholar has to use the entire page for the copy printed at the top of the page before proceeding to asecond copy; Thus by my arrangement unnecessary copying is avoided and waste of paper is completely pre vented.

When the device is not in use, the copy holder B can be swung over flat upon the top of the table A, as indicated in Fig. 3, and bands or straps F, attached to the upper and lower ends of the tablet, are then passed over the holder and tied or fastened to securely hold the said holder in position on the tablet.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire tosecure by Letters Patent- The combination of a tablet adapted to carry the paper to be written on and having a pin projecting from each side edgethereof, and a copy holder having a box for receiving the copies and also having a support at its lower portion to carry a copy in position for observation, the sides of the box being formed with extensions respectively pivoted to the side edges of the tablet, and the extensions bearing upon the said pins of the tablet to maintain the copy-holder in operative position, the copy-holder being capable of swinging forward upon the tablet when in operative position.
