18 Claims. (Cl. 281-44) This invention relates to a handy dispenser for vreleasably holding loose sheets of note paper.
More specifically, the present invention relates to an, accessory for use in connection with a telephone yor for other purposes wherein the user may have only one hand available for taking notes and for operating the dispenser to hold or release the paper sheets according to the lrequirements of the user.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a simplified dispenser for desk use which provides a convenient base and a cover lthat together coact to position a plurality of loose note papers in a given exposed relation upon the Ibase and wherein paper clamping means is confined within the cover having button actuated mechanism to release such clamp means through the instrumentality `of .button mechanism which is exposed through the cover for operation by the user.
Another object of the present invention is to provide coacting rockable lever means for raising and lowering the paper clamping means with respect to a paper holding base and to provide suitable latching mechanism for holding the clamping means in inoperative position for removal of the paper sheets from the base ofthe dispenser.
Another object of the present invention is Vto provide a dispenser of the kind above referred to and wherein two buttons are used to control the holding or release of the individual paper sheets.
Another object of 4the present invention is to introduce mechanism into the paper clamping construction wherein the operation of one of the buttons .t-o bring about the latched condition of the clamping means will not impart or transmit movement to the other of said buttons during this operation.

The paper dispenser comprises a base 1 having suitable anti-friction pads 2 secured thereto and a cover 3 suitably connected with the base and arranged to expose a portion of the base which carries the loose paper note sheets 4 thereon as best shown in Figures 1 and 2.
The base 1 has a back stop 5 secured thereto to position the loose paper sheets 4 longitudinally upon the base while the cover 3 has forwardly extending side guides 6 and 7""connected by a cross piece 8 which side guides position the paper laterally upon the base l. Thus the back stop 5 and the side guides 6 and 7 together comprise coacting means whereby the stack of loose paper sheets are positioned in a given relation with respect to the base and cover.
It should also be noted that the cover substantially encloses the entire clamping mechanism generally indicated at 9 and except for the button openings to be described later, the cover only has the forward opening 10 therein to accommodate a given plurality of paper sheets limited only in height as determined by the depending battle 11 :formed as a part of the cover. The clamping mechanism 9 includes a clamping means comprising a plate 12 having ears 13 supported upon a pivot pin 14 carried by ears 15 from a part of the auxiliary base 16 that 4is suitably secured to the base 1. The forward edge of the plate 12 is provided with a depending foot 17 which engages the adjacent edge of the loose leaf stack of sheets immediately adjacent the back stop 5. A suitable spring 18 is carried upon the pin 14 with one leg 19 of the spring engaging the auxiliary base 16 and with the other leg 20 of the spring engaging the edge of the plate 12 whereby the clamping plate or means 12 is normally held downwardly and in clamping engagement with the sheets, holding the same in xed position upon the basel.
The plate 12 may be raised and lowered by means of therocking link mechanism shown in Figure 3 comprising oppositely related levers 21 and 22 which are pivoted at 23 and 24 to an intermediate connecting plate 25 which carries a push button 26 that extends through a suitable opening 27 in the top of the cover 3.
The levers 21 and 22 have intermediate reactionary portions 23` and 29 supported upon abutments or blocks 3() and 31 that are carried upon the auxiliary base 16. The outer ends or the levers 21 and 22 are indicated at 32 and 33 in cooperative engagement with the plate sections 34 and 35 comprising contiguous portions of the entire plate 12. It should also be noted that the plate 12 has a central aperture 36 for clearance purposes and to permit the central button assembly of the entire arrangement.
It should also be noted that the cover 3 includes suitable depending guide portions 37 and 3S to control the vertical movements of the button 26 in relation to the operating mechanism connected therewith. It should also be noted that the abutments or blocks 30 and 31 are flanked by means of the flanges 39-39 and 41E-40, which flanges-guide the lateral and rocking movements of the rockable levers 21 and 22 during the operation of the button 26.
As best shown in Figure 4, the button 26 is secured by means of a screw 41 to the intermediate bar or link 25 of the rocking link mechanism. In addition, button 26 is hollowed out as at 42' to accommodate a spring detent 42 also connected by the screw 41, and which spring detent has a latching flange 43 carried upon the end of the curved vertical leg 44 of the detent spring 42.
A latch mechanism which cooperates with the actuating mechanism comprising the oppositely related lever construction comprises a latch dog 45 pivoted to the pin 46 which is supported by means of a bracket 47 connected ICC ' with the auxiliary base 16. Figures 2 and 3 illustrate the clamping mechanism in operative clamping position wherein the sheets 4 are engaged by the depending end 17 of the plate 12. This disposes the button 26 in an upward positionv as determined by the general disposition of the connected lever mechanism comprising the links 21 and 22 @as they freely ride upon their respective abutments and with their ends 32 and 33 in engagement with the plate 12. The weight of the intermediate parts of the lever mechanism, together with the button 26 and its associated parts, will hold these members in the position shown in Figures 2 and 3. Obviously the button 51 will normally occupy the position shown in Figures 2, 3 and 4 unless depressed to release the latch dog 45.
To release the paper clamping mechanism comprising the plate 12 and end 17 the user depresses the button 26 which moves the intermediate bar or link 25 of the lever mechanism downwardly rocking each of the respective levers 21 and 22 upon their reactionary portions 28 and 29 to move the mechanism into the position 58 indicated in broken lines in Figure 3. This actuates the plate 12 upwardly against the action of the'spring 18. At the same time the spring detent 42 overrides the latching edge of the rockahle latch dog 45 as the latter flexes the spring leg 44 inwardly of the opening 42 in the button 26 until the button is depressed suliciently to cause the spring detent to flex into its normal position with the ange 43 engaging under the hook end of the rockable latch dog 4S as best shown in Figure 4. When this relationship of the parts is reached, the entire clamp arrangement is rendered inoperative and one or more loose leaf sheets may be taken out of the dispenser at that time.
To again render the clamp means operative the user merely depresses the button 51 which rocks the l-atch dog 45'clockwise as seen in Figure 4 permitting button 26 to move'vertically under the action of the spring 18 and plate 12 whereby the end 17 of the plate 12 again engages the loose leaf paper sheets.
' Attention is Vdirected to the fact that the depression of button 51 is the only movement which occurs in this portion of the mechanism, rocking the latch dog 45 to release the connected mechanism. Depression of the button 26 to obtain a latching position does not move the rockahle latch dog l45 or the button 51 because of the instrumentality of the spring detent 42 which merely moves out of the way of the latch dog until latching position is reached. Obviously, in a design of this particular arrangement the spring 48 has sufiicient tension to prevent rocking of the dog by the spring detent 42 during the depression of the button 26.
The foregoing description refers to a preferred embodiment of the present invention. individual parts and in the combination of elements are contemplated without departure from the fundamental concept of this invention. and changes shall be governed by the breadth and scope of the appended claims directed to this invention.
What I claim is:
1. A note paper dispenser comprising a baseclamp means to releasably hold loose note paper sheets against said base, and control mechanism to actuate said clamp means between operative and inoperative sheet clamping positions with respect to said base, said control mechanism comprising lever means rockably carried upon said base and disposed in contact with said clamp means to raise and lower said clamp means with respect to said sheets, a latch mechanism to hold said clamp means in raised inoperative position, and latch release means connected with said Vlatch mechanism to release the latter thereby freeing'said clamp means to operatively engage Certain changes in the However, such modifications and hold said sheets, said lever mechanism including an operating button connected to actuate said mechanism to raise the clamp means freeing the sheets, and a second operating button connected with said latch mechanism to release the latter thereby actuating said clamp means into contact with said sheets.
2. A note paper dispenser comprising a base, a swingable member on said base, guide means to position a plurality of loose note paper sheets in a given relation upon said base and for engagement by said swingable member, spring means to urge said swingable member into holding contact with said loose paper sheets, and cooperative latch controlled mechanism carried upon said base and including reactionary lever members coacting between said base and said swingable member and arranged to raise said swingable member against the action of said spring means to release said loose note paper sheets.

A note paper dispenser comprising a base, a swingable member on said base, guide means to position u plurality of loose note paper sheets -in a given relation upon said base and for engagement by said swingable member, spring means to urge said swingable member into holding contact with said loose paper sheets, and
cooperative latch controlled mechanism carried upon said base and arranged to raise said swingable member against the action of said spring means to release said loose note paper sheets, said cooperative latch controlled v mechanism comprising tilting lever elements interposed rality of loose note paper sheets in a given relation upon said base and for engagement by said swingable member, spring means to urge sa-id swingable member into holding contact with said loose paper sheets, and cooperative latch controlled mechanism carried upon said base and arranged to raise said swingable member against the action of `said spring means to release said loose note paper sheets, said cooperative latch controlled mechanism comprising tilting lever elements interposed between said base and said 'swingable member to raise said member away from said base for freeing said loose note paper sheets, a latch coacting to retain said lever elements in member raising position, and latch release means to trip the latch whereby said leverelements are released and rendered inoperative causing said swingable member to engage said loose note paper sheets, and cooperative buttons being operatively associated with said lever elements and arranged to control the operation of said swingable member between sheet holding to sheet release positions, one button being connected with said tilting lever elements and said other button being connected with said latch release means.

In a note paper dispenser, a base, clamp means to hold a plurality of loose note paper sheets upon said base, actuating mechanism interposed between said base and clamp means to operate said clamp means from sheet holding position to sheet release position, and latch means to retain said actuating mechanism and clamp means in said sheet release position comprising a rockable latch dog mounted in a predetermined fixed relation with respect to said dispenser base, and a spring detent carried by said actuating mechanism for bodily movement allong a given path with respect to said latch dog, said spring detent being adapted to tiex out of the way of said latch dog when said actuating mechanism is operated to move said clamp means out of sheet holding position whereby no motion is imparted to said latch dog, and said spring detent being arranged to engage said dog when said actuating arena-rr Y mechanism fully operates said clamp means into sheet release position.
6. In a note paper dispenser, a base, clamp means to hold a plurality of loose note paper sheets upon said base, actuating mechanism interposed between said base and clamp means to operate said clamp means from sheet holding position tosheet release position,r and latch means to retain said actuating mechanism and clamp means in said sheet release position comprising a rockable latch dog mounted in ay predetermined xed relation with respect to said dispenser base, and a spring detent carried by said actuating mechanism for bodily movement along a given path `with respect to said latch dog, said spring detent being adapted to llex out of the way of said latch dog when said actuating mechanism is operated to move said clamp means lout 'of sheet holding position whereby no motion is imparted to said latch dog, and said spring detent being arranged to engage said dog when said actuating mechanism fully operates said clamp means into sheet release position, and buttons connected with said Aactuating mechanism to control the movements of said clamp means between sheet holding and sheetfrelease positions, one of said buttons being connected with said actuating mechanism to operate and move directly with said mechanism, and the other of said buttons being arranged to contact said rockable latch dog and to move directly with the movements of said dog, operation of said second button releasing said latch means, and resetting of said latch means by said iirst button imparting no motion to said second button through the coaction of said exing spring detent With -said latch dog.
7. A loose sheet note paper dispenser comprising a base, a cover for said base, coacting means on said base and cover to position a plurality of loose note papers in a given exposed relation upon said base, paper clamping means associated with said base and being confined within said cover and arranged to releasably retain said loose sheet note papers upon said base, actuating mechanism to move said clamping means between paper holding and paper release positions, and button members connected with said actuating mechanism to control the operation of said actuating mechanism, guide means on said cover said button members being carried by said guide means and arranged for disposition through said cover for finger access whereby to operate the clamping means by said actuating mechanism according to the requirements of the user.

A note paper holder comprising a paper support, a clamp to hold said paper, and control mechanism to release said clamp from paper holding position comprising a reactionary lever structure interposed between said clamp and said paper support, a finger button carried by said support and connected with said lever structure to operate the latter for actuating said clamp into paper release position, latch means to lock said lever structure in a position to maintain said clamp out of paper holding position, and release means to trip said latch means to render said reactionary lever structure inoperative and to restore said clamp to paper holding position.

A note paper holder comprising a paper support, a clamp to hold said paper, and control mechanism to release said clamp from paper holding position comprising a reactionary lever structure interposed between said clamp and said paper support, a nger button carried by said support and connected with said lever structure to operate the latter for actuating said clamp into paper release position, latch means to lock said lever structure in a position to maintain said clamp tout of paper holding position, and release means to trip said latch means to render said reactionary lever structure inoperative and to restore said clamp to paper holding position, said release means comprising a second finger button carried by said support and operatively connected Awith said latch means to trip the latter when said latch means is actively holding said lever structure in clamp release position,
l0.'A A note paper dispenser comprising a base, clamp means including a movable paper clamping plate to releasably hold loose note paper sheets against the adjacent surface of said base, and control mechanism to actuate said clamp plate between operative and inoperative sheet clamping positions in coaction with said adjacent surface of the base, said control mechanism comprising connected lever members rockably carried over and above `said adjacent surface of said base to react against said base surface and disposed for direct contact with the underside of said clamp plate to raise and to lower said clamp plate with respect to the sheets supported upon said adjacent surface of the base, a latch mechanism carried by said base to operatively engage said lever members to lock and to hold said clamp plate in a raised inoperative position, and a latch release means connected with said latch mechanism to release such mechanism from its locked inoperative position and to thereby free said clamp plate for operative holding engagement upon said loose note paper sheets supported upon said adjacent surface of said base.

A note paper holder comprising, in combination, a paper support, a clamp swingably mounted upon said support for movement toward and away from said support to hold the paper against the support or to release the paper therefrom, reactionary mechanism interposed between the adjacent surface of said support and the underside of said clamp and arranged to raise and lower the clamp, and a selective clamp control mechanism connected with said reactionary mechanism to actuate the latter to raise and lower the clamp between said paper release and said paper holding positions respectively, said control mechanism incorporating a pair of reciprocably operable push buttons having means independently adapted for coaction with said reactionary mechanism to raise and to lower said clamp to thereby alternately clamp or release the paper under the direct actuation of said reactionary means by said buttons respectively.

In a note paper holder of the character set forth and defined in claim l1, but wherein the clamp is of a predetermined overall size to overlie a given area of the adjacent surface of said support, and wherein said push buttons and the reactionary clamp raising and lowering mechanism are all wholly confined within the peripheral limits of said clamp and operable within said given area of the adjacent surface of the support covered by said clamp.

In a note paper holder of the character set forth and defined in claim l1, but wherein a housing is connected with said support and adapted to enclose said clamp and the reactionary mechanism for raising and lowering said clamp, and wherein said housing is provided with apertures to receive portions of said buttons therethroughf, and guide means connected with said housing and coacting with said buttons to maintain the buttons in positions for reciprocable operation with respect to said housing apertures.

In a note paper holder of the character set forth and defined in claim 1l, a clamp that overlies a given area of one end portion of the support and wherein said push buttons and reactionary mechanism are all wholly located within the peripheral limits of said clamp, and a housing connected with said support and adapted to enclose the clamp, the associated reactionary mechanism and said control mechanism, said housing having apertures therein to permit portions of said buttons to extend outwardly of said housing for operation by a user, and said housing having a slotted open end facing the uncovered portion of said support for the accommodation of loose sheets of note paper to be acted upon by said push button operated clamp.

In a note paper holder of the character set forth and deiined in claim ll, but. wherein said clamp is provided with an open center portion, and wherein said reactionary mechanism engages parts of said clamp disarmar? posed to oppositesides of the open center of said clamp, and wherein said control mechanism is located Within said open center of the clamp for operation with said reactionary mechanism through the open center of said clamp. r
16. A note paper holder comprising, in combination, a paper support, a clamp swingably mounted upon said support for movement toward and away from said support to hold the paper against the support or to release the paper therefrom, and selective control ,mechanism adapted to raise and lower the clamp for paper release and paper holding positions comprising a bodily movable orientation element carried by guide means connected with said support, pivotal means carried by said element, and rockable levers having their ends connected with said pivotal means and being interposed between said support and clamp to react therebetween, each lever having a fulcrum portion provided intermediate its length to react against said support with its free end disposed in engagement with said clamp, and actuating mechanism connected with said orientation element to rock said to oppose rocking of said levers by said actuating mechanism, and wherein latch means is provided to lock said actuation mechanism in operative lever rocking relation to retain said clamp in paper release position, and a latch release means is provided to coact with said latch means to release the latter to again restore said coacting units into paper holding position.
18. In a note paper holder as in claim 17, but wherein said actuation mechanism and said latch release means each include independent and reciprocably guided push buttons for the operation of said latter units.
