/N VEN TOR W/TNESSES mfm Arron/5y A UNITED STATES PATENT Enron..
BERNARD SHELDON, OF BROOKLYN, NEW" YORK.
MACHINE FOR CUTTING AND STAMPiNG CIGARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No; 597,593, dated January 18, 1898.v
Application led March 11l 1897. Serial No. 627,006. ,(No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may con/cern:
Be it known that I, BERNARD SHELDON, of Erooklyn, in the county of vKings and State of N ew York, have invented a new and Improved Machine for Cutting and Stamping Cigars, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to providea machine in which will be `combined a device for cutting the ends oft cigars and a device for bringing type in a position to print upon or stamp a cigar.
A further object ofthe invention is to so conneet the cutting mechanism with the stamping mechanism that the latter will be brought into operation when vthe former is carried to the position to cut or trim the cigar.
Another object of the invention is to provide a clamp through the medium of which the cigar to be cut and stamped maybe rmly held upon a table, but engaged in such manner that the cigar will receive no injury.
Another object of the invention is to construct the various parts in a simple, durable, and economic manner, and to provide a covering for the opening in the table through which the type extends when stamping a cigar, the said covering being automatically carried over the opening when the clamp is released, thereby preventing any trimmings from the cigar from falling on the face of the stamp or type. 4 The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specication, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 isaplan view of the machine. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken substantially on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, the parts of the machine being in their normal position; and Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3, illustrating the cutter and the stamping device both as brought into operation.
The frame A of the machine comprises a table 10, a side 11, projected downward from the table, and two end pieces 12, the side being provided, prefe1ably,with lugs 13, extending below its lower edge to engage with the side surface of a support upon which the frame rests, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4L.
Y A groove Mis made longitudinally iu the top of the table7 preferably adjacent to the uncovered side of the frame, the said groove being adapted to receive a cigar. At one end of the groove a slot 15 is made in the table, the slot being Virtually a continuation of the groove, as that portion of the cigar to be printed upon is made to extend over this slot. A clamp 16 is supported over the slot 15, the under face of the clamp being preferably coucaved and its upper face convened. An arm 17 is secured to l[he central portion of the clamp 16, which arm is carried in direction of the closed end of the trame and is fulcrumed upon bearings 18, secured to the table. At the rear of the bearings 1S a slot 2O is produced in the table, through which a link 19 is carried downward, the upper end of the link being pivotally attached to the rear end of the arm 17, attached to the clamp, since the open portion of the frame is virtually its forward side. The link 19 is provided with a longitudinal slot 19, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and at the rear upper portion of the link a lug 21 is projected outward and normally rests upon the table, as shown in Fig. 3, when the clamp is not being used, the clamp being at that time held in an elevated position, also shown in Fig. 3, by means of a spring 22, secured to the frame A and to the lug 21 of the link. A bar 23, located beneath the table, is pivoted at its inner end in the slot 19 of thelink 19. The bar 23is attached to a cover-slide 24. This slide is supported at its ends in ways 25, made at the ends of the slot 15, and when the clamp 1G is in its elevated position or is not in use the cover-slide 2i will be beneath the opening 15, completely closing it, as shown in Fig. 3, so that scraps of material cannot drop downward through said opening.
The object of closing the opening 15 when the machine is not in use is to prevent the scraps from falling upon the type, since immediately below the opening 15 a type-bed 26 is horizontally supported, the said bed being usually in the nature of a bar. The bed loosely receives studs 27 at its ends, the said studs being projected downward from the un- ICO - the pivoted jaw of the keeper is carried down* i ward the lift-bar is carried upward, engaging with the under face of the type-bar, and at The fixed member 30 of a cigar-cutter ofV ordinary type is secured to one end of the table, its curved or cutting edgeV being at the end of the groove lir for the cigar, and the movable jaw yor member-.3l of the cutter is provided with theordinarycurved cutting'edge to cooperate with ythe corresponding edge ofV the fixed jaw of the cutter, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4l. The pivotedjaw 3l is normally held elevated by means of a spring 32, attached to it and totheframe, thesaid spring being compressed when ,the pivoted Y jaw is carried downward. A link 33 is pivotally attached to the movable jaw 3l ofthe cutter., extending downward through an opening 34 in the ta-V ble. The lower end of the lilik is pivoted to the short end of a lever 35, which lever is fulcrumed upon au end piece l2 of the frame. A litt-bar 36 is attached to the lower and longer endof the lever, extending upward atV an angle thereto, being provided at the'top lift-bar. The head 37, when the partsof the machine are inactive, is below the type-bed and out of engagement therewith; but when ther time the pivoted jaw of Vthe cutter is brought into cutting action with its fixed jaw the type carried by the type-bed will have been pushed upward a sufiicient distance to bring the type in engagement with the cigar. Just before operating the cutter, however, the clamp 16 is engaged ordinarily by the fore and middle fingers of the hand, one being placed at each side of the arm 17. Upon pressing the clamp downward to an engagement with the cigar the cover-slide 24 is carried rearward, as shown in Fig. 4, permitting the type to ascend when the cutter is operated. A clamp shaped and operated as described will hold the cigar iirinly on the table in position to be cut and stamped without injury to said cigar.
I desire it to be understood that preferably the stationarymeinber or jaw 30 of the cigarcutter is made adjustable upon the frame, as shown in dotted lines in Figs. 3 and 4 namely, by making the slots in the lower portion of said member or jaw and passing screws through the slots into the frame. I desire it to be further understood that a drawer may be placed in the frame, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, to hold the type not in use.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of the support having an opening, the type-bed below said opening,
the movable clamp above the opening, means for operating the type-bed, and a slide operated froni the clamp and adapted to cover and Vuncover the opening in the support, substantially asdescribed.
2. The combination ot the support having an opening, the type-bed below said opening, the slide adapted to coverand uncover said opening, rand means for operating the slide, substantially as described.
' 3. The combination, with a support for a cigar, a cigar-cutter and a type-bed operated from the cigar-cutter, the said support being provided with an opening in the surface prepared to receive the cigar, of a movable clamp gagement with a cigar placed over saidopenV ing, a slide operated from the clamp, being adapted to cover and uncover the bottom portion of theopening in the said table, a type- Y bed located below the said opening in the table, andmeans for operating the said typebed, as and for the purpose specified.
5. In a machine for cutting and stamping cigars7 a table having an opening 1n the surface prepared toV receive the cigar, a cigar'- cutter connected with the table, a type-bed loosely supported beneath the table, capable of movement to and from the opening therein, f
a devicefor operating the type-bed through the movement of the pivoted jaw of the cutter, a slide normally located beneath the opening in the table and above the type-bed, a clamp fulcrumed above the table, comprising a head or body and an arm, the head or body being located over the opening in the table, a link connection between the slide and the arm of the clamp, and a tension device normally holding the head or body of the clamp elevated and the slide under the opening in said table, as and for, the purpose set forth. 6. In a machine for stamping cigars, a table having an opening therein over which the cigar is to be placed, a movable type-bed under the table, means for operating the type-bed, a clamp fulcrumed above the table, comprising an arm and a head or body, the latter extending longitudinally overvthe opening in the table, a slide connected with and operated from the clamp, the slide being normally located under the opening in the table, and a tension device likewise connected with the clamp,- normally holding the head thereof at a predetermined elevation above the table, as and for the purpose specified.
