Description
w. B. NAGLE. MANIFOLD'ING DEVICE. .APPLICATION IILED J'AIL25, 1910.
Patented Sept 20, 1910.
WILLIAM B. NAGLE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MANIFOLDING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 20, 1910.
Application led January 25, 1910. Serial No. 540,102.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. NAGLE, a. citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manifoldring Devices, of which the following is a s ueciflcation, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to means and mechanism for holding a bill or bills in position over a page of a book whenever it is desired to produce a carbon copy of such bill. or bills while they are being made out, and has for its object the provision of a very effective device of this character.
To attain the desired end, my invention consists in certain noveland useful combinations o-r arrangements of arts, and peculiarities of construction an operation, all of which will be hereinafter first fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a plan view of a device elnbodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical, cross-sectional view at line A-A of Fig. 1.l Fig. 4.- is a vertical, cross-sectional view at line B-B of F ig. 1.
Similar numerals of reference, wherever they occur, indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
1 is a base piece, preferably made of wood, and of the requisite length and breadth to accommodate a page of a book wherewith it is to be employed. Secured to the base 1 at each end by means of screws 18 are standards v9.
`2 is an angular metallic bar, having end pieces 8, said bar being movably mounted in the standards 9 by means of pins 13. Within the angular bar 2 is pivoted a longitudinal plate 3, normally pressed downward by' springs 5, and a second, superposed plate 4 pivoted thereabove and normally pressed downward by springs 5. Attached to the plate 4 near one end is a manipulating arm 6*i for raising the plate 4 for the insertion or removal of bills.
6 is a manipulating arm attached to plate 3 to facilitate the insertion and removal of carbon paper.
The standards 9 are slottedv for the reception of guide-blocks 14 connected to the bar 2, and extending outward from each of said blocks is a pin 13,
12 are springs which normally force the bar 2 and the parts carried thereby, downward.
l0 are cams, pivoted at 11 and arranged to raise the bar 2 by means of arms 19, and when the cams are turned, the pins 13 will rest in the depressions 20, holding the parts in their elevated position.
16 is a stri of met-al set into the body 1 beneath the edge of the bar 2.
In using my device the 'bar 2 is raised, and the page of the book on which it is desired to make the carbon copy of the bill, is passed beneath said bar resting on the bodv 1, and the said bar is allowed to descend holdin the page in a fixed position the remainder o the book passing beneath the base 1. A sheet of carbon is then passed between the lower angle of the bar 2 and the plate 3, and the blank bill to be made out, is placed between plates 3 and 4. The bill, carbon and leaf are now ready for operation, all being held in a fixed position. By pressing back the arms, 6a the bills may be removed without disturbing the carbon. The holders are manipulated by means of the arms 19, 6 and 6, respectively.4
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A book billing device inwhich is comprised a. flat base, standards fixed to said base at each extremity near one edge, a bar movably mounted between said standards, means for raisin said bar, a spring actuated carbon-holdin plate mounted above said bar, and a spring actuated bill-holding plate located above the carbon holdin plate, pivoted at each eiid, and provided wit independent manipulating means, the whole arranged to operate substantially as shown and described.
2. In a device of the character herein specified, the combination with the flat base, and standards carried thereby, of a book-leaf holder, a carbon sheet holder, and a billholder carried by said standards, and means carried by each holder for independently manipulating the several holders, substantially'as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereto ailix my signature in presenceof two witnesses.
WILLIAM B. NAGLE.
Witnesses:
CHARLES H. GUTMANN, Ror. D. ABELL.
