Be it known thatI, EMInLnnsnR, a citizen of the UnitedStates, lresiding at Chicago, in the county of Cock and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manifolding Devices, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in manifolding devices used more especially for keeping copies of bills and the like in suitable books for this purpose. to provide means for conveniently holding the carbon-sheet in close proximity to the leaf of the blank book, means for furnishing a suitable binder or holder for the carbon, means for holding any number of blank billheads or statements to be filled out, means whereby the holding devices may be raised to allow a leaf of the book to be readily turned, and adjustable means for securing the holding devices to enable its 'use with books of various sizes.

It consists in the various combinations and novel features, which will be described and claimed hereinafter and is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1' is a perspective view of the holding device as secured to a book and also shown in dotted lines in raised position to enable the leaves of the book to be turned. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the holding device detached from the book and showing the carbon-paper binderin position. Figs. 3 and L are views of the combined clip and carbonpaper holder. Fig. 5 is a detail showing the clip for engaging the book-cover. Fig. 6 is a detail showing the carbon-paper binder. Fig. 7 is a detail showing a modified form of rail or rod for the clip to engage with.

Any suitable blank book may be used with this device and may be represented, as shown in the drawings, by 1. A guide rod or tube 2 is adapted to be held substantially in the crease formed by the back binding. This is preferably made with extensions or arms 3, extending at right anglesthereto and pivoted at e to clips or clamps 5, which engage the cover 6 at points about midway of its Width. By means of this novelV method of attachnient the rod or tube 2, with any attachments secured thereto, may be readily raised, as shown in dotted position in Fig. 1, to allow Its objects areA a leaf of the book to be turned. As shown in Figs. 2 and 5, the clip 5 is formed by stamping out of sheet met-al and the fingers 7 struck up to allow the necessary opening for the book-cover. The pivoted arms 3 are bent at right .angles to form stems 8, which extend into the tube 2 and are prevented from being disconnected by pins9 at the ends thereof, which slide in a slot 10 in the tube 2 and en- 'gage with bands 1l at the ends of said tube.

By means of this arrangement the clips 5 may be separated to span the book-cover and then pressed toward each other to engage it. This will also allow a limited adjustment for books of various sizes. The combined billhead and carbon-paper clamp and holder 12 is slidably secured to the slotted tubular guide 2 by a cylindrical head 13, which engages said guide, as shown. The clamp 12 is of the usual form of construction of springclamps; but the upper jaw is provided with a rubber facing 14, and the lower jaw is provided with clips 15 to hold the carbon or copying paper or a holder for the same. By means of these auxiliary clips the bills may be readily removed Without disturbing the carbon-paper, which may be used until worn out. The lower jaw of the clamp 12 is also turned up at the back, asv at 16 16, to form a guide or straight edge against which the billheads may be pressed to hold them in alineinent and proper position.

The carbon or copying paper is preferably secured in a holder or binder 17, which is y plainly shown in Fig. 6. This is made of any suitable material, such as leather, and is provided at the corners with buttons or fasteners 18, which hold the paper in place. It is preferably left open at the bottom to admit using any size sheets of paper.

A modified form of guide-rod is shown in Fig. 7. This consists of a grooved rod 19, and the clamp l2 is provided with a suitable head to engage the same, as shown.

The operation of this device is as follows: The book is opened and the clips 5 pressed onto the cover, as shown, with the guide-rod 2 in the center of the book, The binder 17 with its sheet of carbon-paper is then placed in the clips 15 and one or more bill-heads placed in the clamp 12. A scale 20 on the guide 2 enables the operator to properly adj ust the clamp each time. When the page is filled, the rod 2 is raised, as hereinbefore described, a leaf of the book turned, and the process continued.

I am aware that various minor changes and modications, such as means for securing the clamp toits guide-rod and making the rod adjustable, will readily suggest themselves as coming Within the scope of this invention, which I do not wish to limit to the exact construction shown; but y What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. In a manifolding device the combination of a book, clips engaging the cover of said book, arms pivoted to said clips, a guide-rod 'adjustably secured to said arms, and a clamp slidably secured to said guide-rod.

2. In combination, a book, clips engaging the cover of said book, arms pivotally secured to said clips, a slotted tubular guide adjustably secured to said arms, a clamp provided with a cylindrical head engaging said tubular guide and having auxiliary clips for holding a carbonssheet.

3. In combination, a blank book, clamps for engaging the coverof said book, arms pivotally connected to said clamps, an adjustable guide-rod carried by said arms, a clamp slidably secured to said rod, a guide on said clamp, auxiliary clips on said clamp, a carbon or copying paper holder engaging said clips and provided with fasteners to hold the carbon-paper substantially as described.
