Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 19, 1905.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. SToBIE, a resident of Winslow, in the county of Kennebee and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guide-Rollers for Paper-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in guide-rollers for paper-machines, the object of the invention being to improve upon the construction set forth in Patent No. 753,753, granted March 1, 1904:, and provide a guideroller with hardened ends to withstand the wear of the felt or wire edge thereon.
With this object in View the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a diagrammatic plan view. Fig. 2 is a side View thereof. Fig. 3 is a view in longitudinal section of my improved roller, and Fig. 4 is a similar view of a modification.
1 represents the felt or wire, and 2 my improved guide-roller for compelling the proper movement of the felt. or wire. As is well known in this art, guide-rollers are mounted to be automatically moved to different angles by mechanism automatically controlled by the felt or wire to compel the felt or wire to run true.
My improved roller 2 is covered with soft rubber 3 to exert frictional contact with the wire or felt, and to prevent wear of the roller where it comes in contact with the edges of the felt or wire the rubber covering is vulcanized from each end inward the desired distance to present a harder wearing-surface to the edge of the felt or wire.
In Fig. 4 a roller is illustrated in which the rubber covering 3 terminates short of the ends of the roller and metal collars or sleeves 4 are located on the ends of the roller to receive the wear of the wire or felt edges.
By thus constructing the roller with hardened ends to withstand the wear of the edges of the felt or wire and having softer frictional covering between said hard ends a roller is produced which is a great improvement in the art, and I donot restrict myself to the employment of rubber (soft and vulcanized) or soft rubber and metal, but consider myself at liberty to employ any materials which will accomplish the result soughtnamely, a roller having high frictional qualities, yet having hardened end portions to receive the necessary wear thereon without prematurely destroying the roller.
Slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of the parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not restrict myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit-and scop of my invention.
Having fullydescribed my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Aguide-roller having acovering of great frictional property and harder wearing end portions.
2. The combination with a felt or wire, of a guide-roller adjacent thereto, a frictional covering around said roller, and harder cov- WILLIAM H. STOBIE.
