SWITCH'STRUCTURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 14, 1907.
' Application filed ugust 6,1906- Serial No. 329,275-
To aZZ mil/0m it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY CHARLES STIFF, of Johnstown,.in the county of Cam bria and State of Pennsylvania, have invent-- ed a new and useful Improvement in Switch Structures, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of switches in Which the tongue has an integral depending pintle, which is journaled in a bearing in the main structure.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and eificient device for retaining a frictional pressure on the pintle to prevent the kicking of the tongue.
Another ob 'ect of my invention is to provide means whereby any wear on the pintle can be taken up without removing the paving, the tongue or any of the switch structure.
My invention also consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter described and pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. In which Figure 1 is a plan view of a portion of a switch structure; Fig. 2 .is a transverse sectional view on the line IIII of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view on the line IIIIII of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of the bushing.
In the drawings, 1 is the main structure of the switch which is provided with the usual treads 2, guards 3, and the floor 4. on which the tongue is supported.
Projecting vertically through the switch Within this orifice 5, and retained by means of filling material such as spelter 6, is the externally fluted bushing '7. Seated within a V shaped orifice in the bushing 7, and against the periphery of the pintle 9, is the plate 10. Passing through a screw threaded orifice in the main structure, is the screw 11, the end of this screw bearing against the plate 10, and thereby retaining the plate 10 in frictional contact with the pintle 9.
Secured to the side of the main structure by means of the bolt 12, is the box 13.
14 is the box cover which is provided with the depending flanges 15, which rest on the floor of the box, thereby retaining the cover in its proper position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a railway switch, a tongue having a depending pintle, a plate seated in a recess in the pintle bearing, and a screw to hold the plate against the pintle, for the purpose specified.
2. In a railway switch, a tongue having a depending pintle, a bushing surrounding and forming the bearing for said pintle, a plate seated in an orifice in the bushing, and means to hold the plate against the pintle.
3. In a railway switch, a tongue having a depending pintle, a bushing surrounding and forming the bearing for said pintle, a plate seated in an orifice in the bushing, and a screw to hold the plate against said pintle.
4. In a railway switch, a tongue having a depending pintle, a bushing secured in the main structure surrounding and forming the bearing for said pintle, a plate seated in an orifice in the bushing, and means to hold the plate against the pintle.
5. In a railway switch, a tongue having a depending pintle, a bushing secured in the main structure by means of spelter surrounding and forming the bearing for said pintle, a plate seated in an orifice in the bushing, and a screw to hold the plate against said pintle.
In testimony whereof, I have aifixed my signature in presence of two witnesses:
HENRY CHARLES STIFF.
Witnesses:
L. OCONNELL, H. W. SMITH.
