PAPER=WEIGHT AND GUIDEHRULE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 321,672, dated Jnly- '7, 1885.
Application liled Angnst30,lSS-1. (No model.)
To ati whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES EDWIN Birnnrrfr, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and rSta-te of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Weights and Guideltulers; and I do hereby declare the folien/ing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the saine.
My invention relates to a combined paperweight and guide-ruler, especially adapted for the use of book-keepers to facilitate and aid their Work.
The invention consists of a combined paper- Weight and guideruler formed of a strip of metal, gutta-percha, or other suitable material, in combination with a sliding or movable weight, as will be hereinafter full y described, and pointed ont in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 illustrates a plan view of my improved device. Fig. 2- is an edge view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the lineal of Fig. l. Figs. 4 and 5 illustrate amodiiication.
A represents a ruler formed of a strip ofmeial or other suitable material, slightly curved downwardly at one end to adapt it to t snugly between the pages ofan account-book, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2. This strip A is formed with a central longitudinal groove, a, (preferably of dovetail form in cross-section.) NVithin this groove is arranged a weight, B, of a form to correspond with the groove, and adapted to slidefreely within the latter. The
weight B is provided with a ngerfpieoe or knob, I, to facilitate the sliding of the weight.
In Figs. 4l and 5 I have illustrated a modi cation of the device. In this instance the central groove, a, is omitted,and instead thereof the longitudinal edges of the strip are grooved or guttered, and the Weight B is formed with opposite arms or extensions O, Whose outer ends, c, are slightly bent to enter the edge grooves ofthe strip. rlhus the Weight may be readily moved upon the strip.
It will be understood that the sliding of the weight is for the purpose of keeping it ont of the way of the hand of the writer.
I do not limit myself to the precise construction shown, but reserve to myself the right to make such slight changes as may properly fall within the scope of my invention.
claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination, with a strip or guideruler, of a movable Weight, substantially as set forth.
2. rIhe combination, with a guide ruler curved at one end, as described, of a Weight adj ustably secured to said ruler, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with a grooved ruler or strip, of a Weight formed with angenpiece or knob and adapted to be adj usted upon said ruler, substantially as set fort-h.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES EDXVIN BABBITT.
