UNITE 'rares ATENT roten.
CHARLES WHEELER CHANDLER, OF XENIA, OHIO.
COMBINED BLOTTER-PAD AND RULER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,364, dated December 6, 1892.
Application filed September 7, 1892. Serial No. 445,217. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES WHEELER CHANDLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Xenia, in the county of Greene and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in a Combined Blotter- Pad and Ruler; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has for its object the construction ofaoombined rulerand blotter-pad and to provide means for the ready renewal of the separate blotters when used up; and for these purposes it consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of which it is composed, will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which corresponding' parts are designated by similar marks of reference, Figure l is a top plan view of my invention. Eig. 2 is a longitudinal section on line oc thereof. Fig.
across the top of the strip l or each side of the handle ornknob 3 by screws or nails 5, passing through the ends of straps and taking into the body of the strip l.
A slide 6, of
spring metal, having a tail 7, is secured in the top of each end of the strip l by having its said tail inserted between the top of the strip and the corresponding strap 4C, the other end of each slide being bent upward into an ear 8, while the opposite ends ol' the blotters 9 are inserted below the other portion of the opposite slides 7 and held hy the spring thereof.
From the above it is evident that to renew the blotter-pads it is only necessary to withdraw the slides from under the straps and to remove the blotter and to insert a new one, when by reinserting the slides they will, on their movement toward the center of the strip, draw the blotter taut and hold it in that condition by their pressure thereon.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim issl. In a blotter-pad, the combination of a strip having straps upon the opposite ends of its upper surface and a spring-slide adapted to be inserted beneath the said straps and to clamp the blotter, substantially as described.
2. In a combined blotter-pad and ruler, the combination of a strip having a beveled straight-edge and having straps upon the opposite ends of its upper surface and a springslide adapted to slide beneath each of the said straps, having an upwardly-projecting outer end and adapted to engage a blotter, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
CHAS. WHEELER CHANDLER.
Witnesses:
