BENJAMIN B. LAWRENCE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COLLAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of vLetters Patent No. 790,064, dated May 16, 1905. a
Application filed October 22, 1904. Serial No. 229,557. I i
T all whom, t may concern: i
Beit knownthat I, BENJAMIN B. LAWRENCE,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident 4vIO of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Collar, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The purpose of the invention is to provide an improvement in the construction of turndown collars which will,u admit of the free movement of a band-tie when placed in position on the collar for tying and adjustment,
the tie having practically the same freedom of movement upon aturn-down collar as upon4 a standing collar. 4
Another purpose of the invention is to provide the collar with means for ventilation, which means likewise serves to prevent suction where the tie passes between opposing faces of the members of the collar.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved collar and a tie in position-thereon.
- Fig. 2 is an inner face view of the collar and applied tie, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken practically on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
A represents a turn-down collar which may .be of any desired style, the said collar embodying the usualinner member 10 and outerVV member 11, the inner member being provided of the invention. Between the' openings 14 and the forward end portions of the collar series of aperturesl are produced in the inner member 10 of the collar. These apertures 15 serve a dual purpose, acting as means for ventilation, keeping the neck comparatively cool where the collar when worn naturally fits close to the neck, and also serve to prevent any suction occurring between the inner and the outer members of the collar, which suction might possibly tend to prevent the free movement of the band or body of the necktie between the members of the collar.
Vhen the improved collar is used, the band B of the tie is made to engage with the inner face of the inner member 10 of the collar at the back of the collar, as is shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and then the said band B is threaded through the openings 14 and is carried to the front of the collar over the apertured portions thereof and out at the front in the usual manner. The tie being thus threaded in the collar is prevented from leaving the collar when said collar is removed and is always in position when the collar is to be placed upon a garment, and when said collar is buttoned at the front the curvature of the collar will cause the openings 14 at their forward edges,
to leave the band of the tie to such an extent that the tie at the front may be adjusted as occasion may demand and will slip as freely between the members of a turn-down collar central portion of the collar at the front, which adjustment is exceedingly diiiicult when a closely-fitting turn-down collar is worn.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improved article of manufacture, a turn-down collar having the lower edge of the inner member thereof uniformly straight, and
formed in said member with a rear button- A In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification 1n the presence of two sub- I O scribmg wltnesses.
BENJAMIN B. LAWRENCE.
