Patented Feb. 7, 188-8.

'INVENTWY'IIR;
f UNITED" STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MICHAEL o. MCDONALD, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
NECKSCARF.-
SPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 377,570, dated February 7, 1888., Application filed September 27, 1887. Serial No. 250,858. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, MICHAEL O. MCDONALD, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Neckties, of which the following is a specification.
This necktie is so constructed that when it is in place on the wearer the body or main portion may be drawn down, exposing the shield, on which is an inscription, pictorial illustration, or analogous device, while ori'releasing said main portion it flies up again into position, hiding theinscription, the whole presenting the appearance of an ordinary necktie of the four-in-hand type. v
In the accompanyingv drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a front view of the necktie in position. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the main portion drawn down. Fig. 3 is a rear view with the main portion drawn down and a part of said portion represented as broken out.
A represents the shield portion provided withthe usual band, A, and adapted to be secured to the collar a in the ordinary manner.
B is the main portion extending down over the shirt-front b in the usual manner.- The shield A and main portion B are not sewed together, as is usually the case, but are secured to each other by the elastic connections 0 C, (see Fig. 3,) whose upper ends are attached at O to the rear side of-the shield, and whose lower ends are secured at G to the inner rear side of the main portion. The shield A, as will be observed, lies within and is surrounded by the main portion'B.
The normalposition of the necktie is shown in Fig. 1, in which the main portion is held by the elastic connections snugly up over the shield as far as the band A will allow. By 1 simply drawing down the main portion B the shield A is exposed, and its inscriptionin this case the slang word Rats -brought into view. The extent of the movement of the main portion is limited by the non-elastic checkstrap D, (see Fig. 3,) whose ends are attached to the rear of the two portions A B of the necktie. The tab E may be used to draw down the main portion, and is reached by inserting the hand within the vest.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 7 As a new article of manufacture,- a necktie consisting of a shield having a picture, inscription, orlike device upon the front thereof, and having the neckband connected thereto, and a knot or band surrounding and inclosing said-shield, and having the pendent endsof the tie firmly connected to it, said knot or band and pendent ends being suspended from the shield by elastic connections, so that they may be pulled down bodily, and when released may resume their original position, substantially as described.
MICHAEL O. MCDONALD.
