Be it known that I, STANRY HUGHES, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Randolph, in the county of Dodge and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Muffler, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The purpose of my invention is to provide a collar and muii'ler with a shirt-front and necktie eii'ect which can be attached to a chest-protector, sweater, or shirt and worn to cover the face With the exception of the nose and eyes or so as to cover the mouth and nose as well and which may be worn to provide a warm collar practically reaching to the chin, with or without ear-protectors, the latter being normally attached to the rear of the collar or skirt section of the muiiier.

A further purpose of the invention is to so construct the device that when worn as a collar the mouth-protecting section will serve as a necktie and the nose'- protecting section serve as a dickey or chest-protector, the said nose-protecting section being removable.

rlhe invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully -set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specilication, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is an inner face view of the device laid iiat. Fig. 2 is a front view illustrating the application of the device, the

mouth and nose protector not being in use.v

Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing the mouth-protector applied. Fig. 1 is a rear elevation or' the applied device with the collar or skirt down. Fig. 5V is a front elevation of the device, showing both the nose and mouth protectors in use and the collar turned up. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the device applied, showing the upper portion of the device turned down to expose the face and form a collar over the skirt or ordinary collar portion of the device; and Fig. 7 is a view similar to Fig. 6, but illustrating the ear-protectors applied.

A represents a chest-protector, to which the device is applied in any suitable or approved manner; but the device may be applied with equally good results to a. sweater, a shirt, or an equivalent garment. The skirt B of the device is connected at its forward portion in a detachable manner to the said chest-protector, shirt, or sweater, and at the inner face' of the said skirt or throat section of the device an attaching-strip 10 is secured tofthc said skirt or throat section, the attachment being made at the upper edge of the said attaching-strip, as is shown in Fig. 1. This attaching-strip is provided with a central buttonhole 11, adapted when occasion may require to receive a rear collar-button, and it is further provided with a buttonhole 12 near one end, adapted to receive the front collarbutton oi' a shirt, sweater, or the like.

Above the attaching-strip 10 a hem 13 is located at the inner face of thebody portion O of the device, or that portion which extends above the skirt or throat section B, and a drawstring 14 is passed through this hem, one end of which draw-string extends out at the front of the device, as is shown in Fig. 3, being provided with a button or an equivalent device 15, whereby to prevent the draw string from slipping after it has been adjusted to bringrnv the junction of the body and thetiiroat or skirt section B close to the throat oi' the wearer, as is shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The body-section O of the device is provided at its upper end with two projecting members 16 and 17, and the member 17 carries tabs 18, having one portion of separablebuttons attached adapted for engagement with the other sections oi' said buttons on the projecting member 16, and in fitting the device to the head of the wear'e the projecting portions y16 and 17 are made to overlap, as is illustrated in Figs. 2, 3, and 5.

` The body-section O of the device at the front is cut away to form recessesy 18, (shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 5,) so that when the said bodysection is adjusted over the forehead of the wearer the eyes, nose, and mouth of the wearer remain uncovered, while the other portions of the head below the crown and the neck are completely covered; but an opening 19 is made at the chin portion of the device, as is shown in Fig. 2.

A mouth-protecting shield D is secured to the front of the device where thc body-section connects with the throat or skirt section, at the line where the draw-string 13 is located, adapted when required for use to extend upward, closing the front opening 19, and where the said mouth-protector D connects with the body C of the device sections of separable buttons 20 and 21 are preferably secured to engage with corresponding sections at the opposite edge of the body, and the said mouth-protector D is also provided with sections 22 and 23 of separable buttons at its free edge adapted to engage with corresponding sections 22a and 23u at the front of the device, located one at each side of the opening' 19, as is shown in Fig. 2. The inner face of the mouth-protector D is preferably covered with an ornamental material, so that when the mouth-protector D is in the lower position (shown in Figs. 2, 6, and 7) it acts as a necktie.

A front throat-piece 24 extends downward from the lower edge of the mouth-protector D, as is shown in Fig. 3, and at the bottom portion of this throat-piece 24, which practically forms a continuation of the front of the skirt or throat section B, a nose guard or protector E is connected in any suitable or approved manner. When the nose-protector is required for use, itis carried upward, as shown in Fig. 5, disclosing the throat-piece 24 and a portion of the attaching-band 10, as is also shown in Fig. 5. This nose-protector E is provided with an extension member 25, adapted to receive the nose of the wearer, and a spring 25, carried bythe nose-protector, serves to hold the said protector in proper position relative to the face when in use. `When the nose-protector is brought into action, it practically covers all of the face with the exception of the eyes, yet leaves the nostrils free, as is shown in Fig. 5. The upper ends of the nose-prcteftcr E are attached to the body C in any suitable or approved manner, the attachment being such that the nose-protector may be quickly dropped from the face when desired. In order that the body portion of the device may be fitted closely to the head of the wearer, a substantially V-shaped recess 26 is made at the upper central portion of the back, drawn together by one or more drawstrings 27.

Ear-protectors 28 are detachably connected normally to the outer rear portion of the skirt or throat section B, as is shown in Fig. t, and these ear-protectors are connected by a cord 29 or its equivalent, so that if the earprotectors are required they may be quickly detached from the device proper and applied to the ears, as shown in Fig. 7, and when not required for use they are conveniently held to the skirt or throat section of the device.

If the weather is such that the head need n be protected, the body portion C of the device is disconnected at its members 16 and 17 and is folded downward, as is shown in Figs. 6 and ,7, partaking of the form of a collar, and the 'mouth-protector D occupies a position between the front ends of the downwardly-folded body, constituting a necktie, while the nose-protector E if attached to the device serves to protect the chest in the vicinity of the throat, as is shown in Figs. 6 and 7.

If double protection is desired for the throat of the wearer, when the body-section is secured properly on the head of the wearer the throat or skirt section B may be turned upward, as is shown in Fig. 5, thus forming a double fold around the neck.

I desire it to be understood that the skirtfront may be so made as to fasten to the shirt when the skirt is worn inside of a vest, and when the skirt is worn outside of the vest it is fastened on the vest and will hold the vestcollar close to the body. The nose-protector can be fastened under the skirt portion on the shirt-front and the chest-protector be fastened at the under side of the skirt-front.

Under a construction such as the above a recess is made in the back of the collar, extending to the skirt portion, which allows the collar to pass and [it closely to the neck Without puckering. Tapes may be employed to hold sundry of the parts in place, and suitable fastening devices may be devised for the removable or adjustable parts.

Under the construction just outlined if the forward portion of the collar is omitted it may be worn as a collar-necktie and shirtfront, laundered or not, or Worn as a dickey to protect a white collar, a shirt-bosom, and tie. The chin-protector can on occasion be utilized as a tie of the four-in-hand type, for example.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A muffler, comprising a body-section, a skirt or throat section, means for fastening the body-section on the head of the wearer, and a mouth-protector carried by the throat or skirt section, which mouth-protector is adapted to be carried to an upper protective position or to be dropped downward into an idle position, in which latter position the said protector serves the purposes of a necktie, as

described.

2. A muffler comprising a body and a skirt or throat section, a tension device at the junction of the two sections, the body-section having means for engagement at the front with the forehead of the wearer, being provided with forward recesses exposing the nose, eyes and mouth of the wearer, and a protector for the mouth having attachment adjacent to the connection of the skirt or throat section and the body-section, and means for securing the said mouth-protector in an upper position at the front of the device and over the mouth of the wearer, as set forth.

3. A muffler comprising a body and a skirt TOO fir,

or throat section, a tension device at the junction of the two sections, the body-section having means for engagement at the front with an extension to receive the nose,- and means for holding the said nose-protector in transverse alinement with the face of the wearer, the nose-protector in wearing position being adapted to be carried over the mouth-protector, as described.

4. A muffler, consisting of-a body-section, means for fitting the body-section to the head of the wearer, a skirt or throat section connected with the body-section, capable of being turned upward or of being carried downward, the body-section having an opening at the front normally disclosing the eyes, nose and mouth of the wearer,a mouth-protector located at the front of the body, adjacent to its connection with the throat-section, means for fastening the mouth-protector in an upper position, and a nose-protector detachably connected to the front lower central' portion of the throat-section and adapted to be carried upward over the mouth-protector and secured in position on the body of the device, as described. 5. A muffler consisting of a body-section means for fitting the body-section to the head of the wearer, a skirt or throat section connected with the body-section, capable of Vbeing turned upward or of being carried downward, the body-section having an opening at the front normally disclosing the eyes, nose and mouth of the wearer, a mouth-protector located at the front of the body adjacent to its connection with the throat or skirt section, means for fastening the mouth-protector in an upper position, a nose-protector detachably connected to the front lower central portion of the throat-section and adapted to be carried upward over the mouth-protector and secured in positionhon the body of the device, a draw-string located at the rear of the body, a second draw-string located where the skirt or throat section connects with the body-section, and a shaping device for the nose-protector, all combined for operation substantially as described.

6. A muffler consisting of a body-section, adapted to be secured over the head of the wearer or to be folded downward to partake of the form of a collar, a skirt or throat section connected with the body-section, capable of being turnedupward or of being carried downward, the body-section having an opening at the front normally disclosing the eyes, nose and mouth of the wearer, a mouthprotector located at the front of the body adjacent to its connection with the throat or skirt section, means for lfastening the mouthprotector in an upper position, a nose-protector connected to the front lower central portion of the .throat-section and adapted to be carried upward over the mouth-protector and secured in position on the body of the device, and ear-protectors detachably connected with the skirt or throat section of the device, as described.

7 A mufier, comprising a body-section having a skirt or throat section and adapted to be secured over the head of the wearer to disclose the eyes, nose and mouth, a mouthprotector secured to the front of the muffler and adapted to be carried toupper protective position or to be dropped down into an idle position, and a nose-protector-secured to the mufier below the mouth-protector and adapted to be carried upward over the mouthprotector, as set forth.

8. A muier, comprising a body having a skirt and adapted to be secured over the head of the wearer to disclose the eyes and nose, and a flap secured to the lower edge of the front portion of the skirt and having an ,extension to receive the nose, said flap being of. a size that when carried upward and secured to the body it extends to the eyes, whereby all the face below the eyes will be covered, as set forth.

9. A mufier, comprising a body having a skirt-section and adapted to be secured over the head of the wearer to disclose the eyes and nose, a iiap secured to the lower edge of the front portion of the skirt and having a nose extension, and a spring carried by the flap for holding the nose extension in position, said iap being adapted to be carried upward and secured to the body and when carried upward extending to the eyes, as set forth.
