Be it known that [,EDwARn B. MoCLINTooK, a citizen of the United States, residing at El Faso, in the county of El Paso and State of Texas. have invented a new and useful File, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to that class of files employed for holding and storing papers of Various sorts; and the object is to provide a simple and novel structure which can be readily and cheaply manufactured and within which documents may be readily placed and readily removed, said structure at the same time serving as a secure holder or retainer for the papers contained therein.

The preferred form of construction is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, where- Figure l is a perspective view of the file,

showing the front face thereof. Fig. 2 isa rear elevation of said file. Fig. 3 1s a vertical longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 4 1s a horizontal sectional view through the same. Fig. 5 is a View in elevation of the file opened.

Similar reference-numerals indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.

In the'embodiment illustrated a bodyis provided which is formed of superposed layers 6 and 7 disposed in crossed relation, as illustrated in Fig. 5, and secured together by suitable fastening devices 8. The inner layer 7 is provided at its ends with foldable flaps 9, extending longitudinally thereof, while the outer layer 6 has side flaps 10, that are also foldable. The outer layer 6 is furthermore provided contiguous to the inner edges of the iiaps l0 with sets of oblong eyelets 11. Two of these sets are shown, though a greater or less number may be employed, as desired. In line therewith and located preferably only in the inner layer 7 are transversely-disposed series of eyelets 12, that are also preferably oblong. Loop members in the form of tapes 13 each have one end threaded through one of the eyelets 1l and knotted, as shown at 14, withinv the same, said loop members thence passing through the other eyelet 11, through the eyelets 12, extending between the layers,

and finally passing outwardly through the eyelet ll, in which the knotted end 14 is secured.

In placing paper within the file said file is opened, substantially as shown in Fig. 5, after which the end fiaps are folded inwardly over the papers and the side flaps folded over the end liaps. The exposed or loop members are then made large enough so that they can be passed over the ends of the file, as indicated in Fig. l, and thus extend across the folded flaps. Upon drawing outwardly upon the free ends of the loop members said members can be tightened and will be held frictionally by their passage through the various eyelets. In unfastening the {ile it is merely necessary to loosen the loops again, which can beaccomplished by drawing the free end backwardly through the eyelet, throwing the loops again over the ends of the file, and thus leaving the fiaps free.

It will be apparentthat papers can be conveniently stored in and removed from this file and are securely retained therein. The necessity of rubber bands and binders is obviated, as are also exposed fastening-buttons and the like. The tapes may be made comparatively broad and strong and constitute secure binders which will efciently hold the file in closed condition.

From the foregoing it is thought that the construction, operation, and many advantages of the herein-described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art without fur ther description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the herein-described invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a file, the combination with a body having eyelets, of flaps carried by the body and foldable upon the same, and a flexible loop member arranged to surround and secure the flaps when in folded relation, said loop member having one terminal secured to the body vand the other terminal portion adjustably threaded through the eyelets and being Jfrietionally held in its passage therethrough.

2. In a iile, the combination With a body having eyelets, of aps connected to the body and foldable upon the same, and a flexible loop member formed of aoontinuous tape, said tape being free from and arranged to surround and secure the flaps when'in Jfolded relation, having one terminal secured to the body and the other terminal portion adjustably threaded l through the eyelets and friotionally held in its passage therethrough. 3. In a tile, the combination with a body having foldable side and end flaps, said body being provided with a transverse series of eyelets, and a loop member having one end passing through one of the eyelets and knotted, said loop member being also threaded through the other eyelets and friotionally held against movement thereby. f

4. In a lile, the Combination with a body comprising superposed layers, one of said layers having eyelets therein, of'a loop member having a portion threaded through the eyelets and frietionally held thereby.

5. In a file', the combination With a body comprising superposed layers having flaps, one of said layers having eyelets therein, the other layer extending over the eyelets, of a loop member having a portion threaded through the eyelets and friotionally held thereby.

6. In a lile, the combination with a body comprising crossed layers provided With flaps that are located respectively at the side and end edges, the inner of said layers having transversely-disposed series of eyelets, the other layer having eyelets contiguous to the inner edges of the flaps, and a flexible tape having one end"passingthrough one of the latter eyelets and secured therein, said tape also passing through the other of said latter eyelets and being threaded through the transverse series of eyelets, forming a loop member.
