BACK BANDBUCKLE.
APPLICATION 11.31) MAB..18, 1904.
WITNESSES." /NVENTO/? ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES Patented May 2, 1905.
PATENT OEEicE.
, BACK-BAND BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters latent No. 789,043, dated May 2, 1905 Application filed March 18, 190 Serial No. 198,792.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM ROBERT ME- DEARIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Back-Band Buckles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in that class of back-band buckles in which a front or face plate slides on a rear or base plate to form a closure for the hook which carries the trace-chain.
The object of my invention is to provide a combined back-band buckle and trace-carrier which shall be simple in construction, eflicient in operation, easily manipulated, and which can be made from a very small amount of material.
To these ends my invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation showing one form of buckle. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of Fig. 1, taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an elevation showing another form of buckle. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 4 4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a view of buckle made entirely of wire. Fig. 6 is a sectional view on line 6 6 of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a view of a modification.
Referring now to the several figures of the drawings, A is the base or rear plate, provided at its lower end with a downwardlyprojecting and upwardly-turned hook member A and having the slot A in its body portion. At or near the junction of the hook member and the body portion are the inwardlyprojectiug ears or guides A which project toward each other, as shown.
B is the front or face plate, provided with the slot B in its body portion and having a downwardly-projecting tongue or extension B which is bent or turned outwardly at substantially a right angle to form theguard or keeper B the purpose of which will be presently set forth.
In assembling the parts to make a complete buckle the tongue or extension B of plate B is slid into place between the ears orguides A of the base-plate A. The tongue B is preferably provided with a hump or swell B", said tongue in its central portion B being bent rearwardly to lie against the front face of the base-plate. The purpose of the hump or swell is to cause the two plates to bind snugly against each other when the front plate is slid downwardly and hold the guard or keeper B securely against the upper end of the hook A. The webbing of the backband is passed through the slots in the two plates and then drawn to the desired adjustment. By pushing guard or keeper B the end of which projects slightly beyond the front face of the hook, said hook is opened and the trace-chain can be readily placed in said hook. The guard is then pushed downwardly again until it rests on the end of the hook, thus forming a closure for the same and a loop in which the trace-chain rests.
The two members of combined buckle'and trace-carrier can be made entirely of sheet metal or one of sheet metal and the other of wire, or they can both be made of wire, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawings.
A simple and cheap form of my device can be made as shown in Fig. 7 in which form the ears or guides are omitted and the tongue of the face-plate slides within the hook. In this form the sole connecting means for the two members of the buckle is the webbing of the back-band passed through the respective slots of the two plates.
The construction of my improved buckle is such that when the web is inserted in the slots and pulled down in position there is no chance for the web toslip, because the ears or guides on the base-plate within which the face-plate slides holds both members of the buckle tightly together, making a clamp on the web. Furthermore, there is no liability of the link of the trace-chain getting out of the hook, because the said hook is entirely closed by the guard or keeper and will remain so until said guard is forced upwardly by hand.
It will be seen that this combined back-band buckle and trace-carrier is simple, cheap, easily adjusted, strong, and durable, and having no teeth will not destroy the web.
whereby a band or web passed through the slots of the two plates is clamped between the adjacent fac'esofi the two plates-or frames.
2'. A combined back-band buckle and traceca'rrier', consisting of a base plate or: frame hayinga slot in its upper p'ortionand: an upwardly-turned hook. at its lower endg. ears or guidesprojecting f'romithe side edges'of said: plate inwardly over the face thereof below the said slot, a face: plateor frame havinga;
slot in its upperportion and a downwardlyprojectingtongue member extending: from thevhody of said face-plate betweenthe-saidzears or guides-of the baseeplatmthe lower end of said tongue bent outwardly at an angle'and adapted to-abut against the upper end of the r upturned hook of the base-plate and close the same-,:whereby' when; a. band. or web; is; passed through the slots of thetwo plates; it will be clamped between the adjacent faces of said base and face plates.
3. A combined back-band buckle and trace- G'ZHZIlBLfi; comprising-a base;- plate": or; frame havingaslot in its upper portion and an upwardlyturned hook at its lower end, ears or guides projecting f i'orn the side edges of said plate and extending inwardly over the front face of the same, a frontor face plate having a slot in its upper portion, a tongue projecting downwardly from said plate and fitted between the ears or guides on the base-plate, an
outwardly-bent guardia'tthe lowerend of the tongu eadapted to close-thee hook when inopenative position; said. tongue" also provided with a hump or curved portion which engages the" inner faces: of the ears or guides whensaid: guard isfonc'edi downwardly, and forces the base and. face: plateaou frames: closely to:- gether', whereby aibanda orweb passedithrough the slots insaid plateszwillibezsecurely clamped between said plates or frames.
