HAN D-REST FOR NOTE-BOOKS- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 787,140, dated April 11, 1905.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I. CARL ARNOLD, a subject of the German Emperor. residing at Selb, Kingdom of Bavaria, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in [land-Rests for Note-Books and the Like, of which the following is a specification.

In making entries in account and other thick hooks it is the custom to employ rests inserted between the leaves for the purpose of supporting the hand when writing on the bottom portion of the page. For note and other thin hooks. however. such rests are unsuitable, as no adequate hold ali'orded them. Such note and memorandum books have nevertheless very frequently to be written in while being held in the hand. so that a rest for the latter is very desirable. The present invention meets this requirement by providing a thin plate, either lying upon or let into the inside of the l) )0l(-L'O\tl. The plate can be turned forward or drawn out. so as to project beyond the bottom edge of the book and present a rest for the \\'ritinghaml.

In order to make the invention more readily lllltltlStUUtl. it will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings. in which e Figure 1 shows a note-book cover to which [lap-rests have been secured. Figs. 2 to i show like views of note-book covers to which slidmg rests have been applied.

Referring to Fig. 1,1! is the rest, constructed in the form of a llap, hinged to the inside of the book-cover 6. One such rest is shown applied to each side of the cover, that to the left being open for use and that to the right closed up.

In the construction shown in Fig. 2 the flap (1 is let into the cover 6, in which it slides in such manner that it can be drawn out when required. Shoulders c on the slide 1/ limit the outward motion by butting against the shoulders Z of the cover 1).

In Fig. 3 the slide 1/ has lateral projections guided by two fillets or bars.

Fig. i shows a slide 1/1, having eyes through which the guide-rods or lillets pass.

In a hand-rest for note-books, the combination of the book-cover having longitudinal guide-wires arranged upon the inside thereof, a plane member having slides upon its edges. the said slides being in engagement with thesaid guide-wires, substantially as specified.
