Patented April 4, 1905.
ASSIGNOR TO EAGLE PENCIL COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DlSPLAY RACK on HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 786,719, dated April 4, 1905.
Application filed December 3, 1904. Serial No. 235,817.
To a, whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP BER LZHEIMER. of New York city, county of New York, State of New York, have inventeda new and useful Improvement in Display Racks or Holders,
. pockets in suitable or desired number to receive the articles to be displayed and flexibly connected or jointed together, so that they may be folded together in compact form or be opened out into a variety of display arrangements. Display-racks of this general type are illustrated in Letters Patent Nos.
769,592 and 769,616, of September 6, 1904.
The blocks are so formed that when folded together their meeting sides or faces converge to a common center. This is the main characteristic of the holder and admits of the blocks being unfolded or spread out into a variety of unique and attractive display-arrangements.
In the accompanying drawings, to which I shall now refer for a better understanding of my improvement, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a display-holder embodying the invention, the sections being folded together. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same with sections unfolded and spread apart in one display arrangement. Fig. 3 is a plan with the sections reversed from the position shown in Fig. 1. The outline of the holder in Fig. 1 is circular; in Fig. 3 it is square. Fig. 4 is d a vertical section through one of thesections or blocks. Figs. 5 to 10. inclusive, are diagrammatic plan views of variously-shaped provided each with a number of verticalpockets 60f suitable shape to receive and hold the articles to be-displayed. In this instance they are intended for penholders or pencils, one of which is shown at P. The blocks are prefer- 1 ably hollow and made each of a closed paste board box or receptacle, with an internal diaphragm (0. Corresponding holes are formed in the top of the box and in the diaphragm, and registering holes in these two parts form the pockets. The'blocks A are self-supporting, each resting on its own bottom. They are jointed together tandem at what are their outer ends when they are folded together in compact form, as in Fig. 1, Fig. 5, Fig. 7 and Fig. 9. The hinge or joint between adjoining blocks may conveniently be formed of a strip c'of suitable flexible or pliable material, which is pasted or glued to the outer faces of the two adjoining blocks, and each joint may be reinforced by a suitable strip d, pasted or glued to the interior opposite faces of the two blocks adjoining the point where the external strip is'located. The blocks A when thus connected can be unfolded and rearranged to provide a variety of display arrangements, one of which is shown in Fig. 2 and another in Fig. 3.
In Figs.- and 6 the blocks, eight in nunnber, are sectoral in shape, and each is oneeighth of a circle or a sector of forty-five degrees. Otherwise the construction is the same as in Figs. 1 to 4:. Fig. 5 shows the eight blocks folded together to form a solid composite cylindrical body. Fig. 6 shows them unfolded and rearranged to form an eight-pointed star. Figs. 7 8 show, respectively, in folded and unfolded and rearranged positions a series of connected blocks of'triangnlar shape. Figs. 9 and 10 show in the same relation a series of connected blocks of L shape, which when put together as in Fig. 9 have the shape of a Greek cross and when unfolded and rearranged as in Fig. 10 form a hollow square.
These several styles of blocks diff er between themselves in external configuration; but it will be noted that the same characteristic is found in each assemblage, viz: The meeting faces of the blocks when folded together are on lines which converge to one and the same formed with meeting laees or sides which point or common center. Other shapes of when the blocks:Lrelolde 'l together converge blocks may be employed so long as this charto one and the same point or common center,
acterlstic is retained. substantially as hereinhefore set forth.
5 Having described my improvement, What I In testimony whereof I allix my signaturein 5 claim herein as new, and desire to secure by presence of two Witnesses. Letters Patent, is 'll l'lllill .l'lEROLZl E MICK.
