PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS A. BUMGARDNER, OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR OF TWO- THIRDS TO JOHN DALE AND MINNESOTA.
FRANOIS C. PEABODY, OF ST. PAUL,
TELEPHONE ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 786,263, dated April 4, 1905. Application filed August 16, 1904. Serial No. 220,987.
To It whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS A. BUMGARDNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Telephone Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in card-holding attachments for telephones, its object being to provide a device which can be so secured to an ordinary desk-telephone as to hold a card in the proper position in view of the user.
To this end my invention consists in the features of construction and combination hereinafter particularly described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a desk-telephone shown provided with my attachment. Fig. 2 is a front view of the attachment, and Fig. 3 is a section on line a as of Fig. 2.
In the drawings, A represents a desk-telephone of ordinary construction provided with a. mouthpiece 2, secured to .the standard of the telephone by a pivot 3, carrying a thumbnut 4.
My attachment consists, preferably, of a sheet-metal plate bent so that the upper end 5 will stand at a right angle to the lower end 6. In the form shown the lower end 6 is formed with a slot 7 to receive the pivot 3, the upper end carrying a transverse cardholder 8. The card-holder 8 is formed with a groove 9 to hold a card 10.
In using the form of my invention shown in the drawings the pivot 3 will pass through the slot 7, the attachment being gripped between the nut 4 and the adjacent portion of the telephone-standard. The attachment is turned to the desired angle and held in such position by tightening the nut 4. The card 10 then being inserted in the holder will present to the view of the user any address or any other memorandum inscribed thereon.
In the form shown the common pivotal support for the mouthpiece and attachment is secured by forming the attachment with a slot in its lower end to receive the transverse pivot 3. The construction of the attachment may, however, be modified without departing from my invention, the idea of which is to have the device so supported in connection with the mouthpiece that it may be turned to and held in a position corresponding with the position assumed by the mouthpiece, and thus always stand at the proper angle to be the easiest read by the user.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a telephone-stand provided with a pivotally-supported mouthpiece, of a card holding attachment having common pivotal support with said mouthpiece so as to be turnable in the same plane.
2. The combination with the transverse pivot of a telephone-stand, of a device engaging the pivot and provided with means for removably holding acard.
3. In combination a pivot carried by a telephone-stand, an attachment bent so that the upper end will stand at an angle with the lower end, the lower end being formed with an opening to receive the pivot and the upper end being provided with a transverse holder formed with a groove for receiving a card.
4. In combination with a transverse pivot of a telephone-stand, an attachment bent to bring the upper end into a plane transverse to that of the lower end, the lower end being formed with a slot to receive said pivot. and the upperdend with means for removably holding a car In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LOUIS A. BUMGARDNER.
