MUSIC-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 556,579, dated March 1'7, 1896.

Application filed July 3, 1895. Serial No. 554,804. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, EDWIN J. LEACH and WILLARD G. BRYANT, citizens of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Music-Holders; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to music-holders, and has for its object an improvement in that class of holders which are intended to be used with musical instruments.

It consists of an attachment to be added to the clip in common use, sometimes called the lyre-holder, and is adapt-ed to be used in connection with any similar music-holding clip.

In the drawings, Figure 1 shows the holder with a sheet of music in place. Fig. 2 shows the music-holder as used for holding purposes.

The lyre-holder in common use consists of a standard A, at the end of which is a plate usually formed in the shape of the lyre B, and to the front of it is secured a spring-clip O. WVe attach to this an additional part, (shown in Fig. 2,) which consists of a wire bent into the form of a fork, the end of each prong being returned on itself, as shown at b b, At the crotch of the fork the wire is bent into a looped form, as shown at c, and is provided with a socket 01 formed of the bent wire, into which the standard A of the lyre-holder is inserted and which is capable of slipping along the standard from the lower part A to the junction A between the standard and the lyre. In forming the socket d the body of the wire is bent abruptly upward at an angle with the fork branch I) b, then outward, turned at right angles across the main axis of the fork, and again turned in a loop and bent down to the other branch of the fork. When thus formed there is between the two outstanding parts 6 e a sufficient amount of spring so that if the original construction is such that the opening between e and e is slightly less than the stem A the crotch of the fork will be held to the stem quite securely. The two branches 1) b are inserted through the opening F in the lyre, and the spring gripping part at the crotch of the fork engages with the stem A, and the fork may now be adjusted with respect to the lyre so that the crotch is either at the point A or at the point A or anywhere between those. points. A sheet of music pushed under the return ends of the fork is next laid on the plane of the fork, the clip 0 opened, and the fork retracted by grasping the loops 0 with the thumb and drawing the attachment backward until the edge of thesheet of paper or edge of the book has been drawn under the jaws of the clip 0. The clip is released and the music is then held securely in place.

What we wish to claim is 1. In combination with a standard provided with a perforated clip, a forked slide provided with spring engaging loops adapted to engage the standard, and with holding-loops at the outer ends of said forks: the branches of the forks being adapted to engage through the perforated clip, substantially as described.

2. The combination of a standard and a perforated clip terminating the standard, a forked slide provided with engaging loops adapted to engage the standard, and with branches adapted to pass through the perforation of the clip, substantially as described.
