rtTtZhilT Uhtrieui SI'lU'l'TElQ -WOWMEWE SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 783,857,datec1 February 28, 1905.
Application filed August 25,1904. Serial No. 222,081.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, DE Vl rrtr M. COINER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Statesville, in the county of lredell and State 01 North Carolina, have made certain new and usel ul Improvements in Shutter-Workers, 01 which the following is a specification.
My invention is an im n-ovement in shutterworkers, and has for an object to provide a novel (EOl'lStl'llClllOll whereby a sprocket-chain may be utilized for opening and cl i sing the shutters, the shutters may be supported in such manner that they may be readily oper ated and may be removed from the operating or working devices at will, and by which the sprocket-chain may be tightened up whenever desired; and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
in the drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of the outer side of a pair of blinds provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on about line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged horizontal section on about line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4% is a detail perspective view of the shutter-section. Fig.
is a detail sectional view of the operatingsection, and Fig. 6 is a detail section on about line 6 6 of Fig. l.
In carrying out my invention 1 provide a s n'oeket-cl'iain A, which extends between what for convenience of reference l term the shutter-secti n H and the operating-section (I, the former being arranged on the outer side of the sill I) and the latter on the inner side 01' the said sill or within the room in convenicnt reach of the operator. The shuttersection B comprises a suitable casing having upper and lower plates H and B between which the sprocket-wheel E is arranged, and also provided at its ends with lugs 7) for the screws, by which the section .ltl is secured to the window-sill. The plates B and B are provided at 7/ with openings forming bearings, in which journal the hub extensions co'f the SPIOClKBll-WllQBl E, one of said hub extensions journaling in the upper plate B and the other in the lower plate B so the sprocketwheel is journaled permanently in the upper and lower plates of the section (l, as will he understood from Fig. lof the drawings. The sprocketwheel is provided with a central angular opening a, which extends entirely through it and receives the pintle or shaft it on the lower end ol the butt G, which is socured to the shutter it near its lower end. This shaft 1? may move freely in a longitudinal direction within the opening w, but is keyed in the sprocket-udreel l3 so it must turn in colmection with said wheel, so that the turning ol the wheel l5 will turn the shalt H", and thus turn the shutter from open to closed position, and vice versa. In order to relieve the sprocket-wheel of the weight of the shutter ll, l supportsuch shutter entirely from its upper hinge, leaving the lower hinge or pivot 01'' the shutter free of all weight, so that it may be operated freely without regard to the might of the shutter. This also per mits the ready removal ol' the shutter whenever desired by simply lifting same when open without in any degree deranging the shutterworking devices.
The chain A connects the sprocket-wheel it] with the sprocket-wheel .l, which is jonrnaled in the upper andlower plates or the operatingsection C so the turning oi the wheel J will correspoliidingly operate the wheel it. At its upper sidethe wheel J is provided with a lever J, having a detent-pawl J engaging with the racks J on the section 3, so the wheel .l may be held in any desired position in order to hold the shutter open, closed, or in any intermediate position. lt will be noticed that the pivot ot' the wheel .1 is set sullir-iently away from the inner edge ol the sill i) to permit sill and at an angle to the Face oi the sill in order to take up any shrinkage in the material. The section 0 is also provided with lugs U, provided with slots (1,elongated ,as best shown in Fig. 5, so the screws (1 passing through said slots in the sill may he slackened and the section (i be adjusted along the sill in order to take up any slight slack in the chain A.
The construction is simple, can be easily applied to shutters in new work or in old, and will be found to operate el'licicntly for the desired purpose.
the lever .l to be swung back against the said,
too
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The improvement in shutter workers herein described, comprising in combination with the sill and the shutters the operating-section having its casing provided with bearings for the operating sprocket-wheel and with lugs for the securing-screws, said lugs having slots elongated in the direction of length of the section whereby the latter may be adjusted along the sill when secured thereto, the operatingwheel journaled in said section and having an operating-lever, the shutter-section having upper and lower plates provided with bearings for the sprocket-wheel, the sprocket-wheel having upper and lower hub-sections journaled in their bearings, said wheel being provided with a central angular opening for the shaft of the lower butt of the shutter, the sprocketchain connecting said sprocket-wheels, and the 3 lower shutter-butt having a depending shaft fitting in the central opening of the sprocket of the shutter-section and movable longitudinally therein, substantially as set forth.
2. A shutter-worker comprising a shuttersection having a journaled'sprocket-wheel provided with a central opening for the shaft of the shutter-butt, means for turning said sprocketwheel and the shutter-butt having a depend ing shaft fitting in the opening in the sprocketwheel and keyed from turning therein and movable longitudinally in said opening, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination in a sh utter-worker, the shutter-section having upper and lower plates provided with bearings, the sprocket-wheel arranged between said plates and having hub projections journaled in the bearings of said upper and lower plates, said sprocket-wheel being provided with a central non-circular opening and the shutter-butt having a shaft movable longitudinally in the central opening of said sprocket and keyed from turning therein, substantially as set forth.
