Specification of Letters iatent. Patentgd Hwy, 23, 11915,
Application filed April as, 1915. Serial no. 24,485.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, STEVE L. PHILLIPS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monessen, in the county of VVestmoreland,
* State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shutter-Qperating Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in means for opening and closing shutters.
The object of the present invention resides in the provision of a device which may be associated with a pair of the usual shutters hinged on the outside of a window, whereby said shutters may be opened and closed from the inside.
It is a more specific object of the invention to provide such a device which is simple and efficient in operation, which is of such design that it presents little obstruction in front of the window and which furthermore may be attached to any conventional form of window and shutter in a ready manner.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention resides more particularly in the novel combination, formation and arrangement of parts, hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference designate similar parts.
Figure l is a horizontal sectional view taken through a window frame and shutters and showing the improved device for actuating said shutters. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the shaft bearings, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the shaft locking member.
Referring now to the drawing, 5 designates a usual form of window casing and 6-6 a pair of shutters pivoted at 7 outwardly of the sides thereof. The improved means for opening and closing these shutters comprises a shaft 8 disposed transversely of the window frame and journally carried by brackets extending inwardly therefrom, each of said brackets comprising an attaching plate 9 and an arm 10 carrying the Shaft receiving sleeve 11. The shaft held against longitudinal movement rela tlvely to the sleeves by a plurality of collars 12 on the shaft, these collars being provided -with set screws 13 whereby they may be locked in place. Brackets 14 extend outwardly from the frame at the sides of the shutters and carryrollers 15 around which are trained ropes 16 having their outer ends secured to the shutters inwardly of their pivots and their other ends wound on the shaft. A second pair of ropes 17 are secured to the shutters and are also wound on the shaft 8, it being understood that these ropes may be extended through or past the casing in any desired manner. Thus by rotating the shaft in either direction, the shutters are swung. As the are through which the attachingpoints of the ropes 1'? swing is greater than that of the ropes 16, said ropes must be more rapidly wound or unwound on the shaft than the ropes 16, and to provide for this drums 17 are carried on the shaft on which the said ropes 17 are wound.
To facilitate the rotation of the shaft a sleeve 18 is positioned on the central portion thereof and locked by means of the set screw 19, the outer peripherv of said sleeve being roughened if desired to facilitate gripping it.
Means are provided to lock the shaft against rotation to thus hold the shutters against swinging movement. and this means comprises a sleeve 20 on the shaft having a pair of arms 21 adapted to embrace the arm 10 of a shaft bracket. This sleeve may he slid back and forth to locking and releasing position and is provided with a thumb screw 22 wherebv it may be held in either position.
From the foregoing it is seen that a very simple structure has been provided which will swing the shutters to open or closed position and hold them against undesired swinging in either of said positions.
What is claimed. is:-
1. In a shutter operating device. the combination with a window frame and shutters hinged thereto, of a shaft journaled parallel with the sill of the frame, a pullev mounted exterior to the frame at each side thereof, operating cables wound upon the ends of the shaft and connected with the outer faces of the corresponding shutters, said cables be ing disposed to engage around the corre spending pulleys, and other cables connected with the shaft inwardly of the first mentioned cables and with the inner faces of the shutters.
brackets, cables secured to the shutters and to the shaft whereby said shutters may be simultaneously operated, and locking means for said shaft comprising a sleeve slidable on said shaft, arms carried by the sleeve and adapted to embrace the bracket, and means carried by the sleeve for locking the shaft against rotation. 15
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
STEVE L. PHILLIPS.
