UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH WRIGHTSMAN, OF HARPER, KANSAS.
WINDOW-SHUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 277,971, dated May 22, .1883.
Application filed January 11,1883. (we model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH WRIGHTSMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harper, in the county of Harper and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Nindow- Shutter, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to window-shutters and mechanism for operating the same; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a front view of a window-frame embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is'a rear view of the same. on the line as w in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view on'the line y y in Figs. 1 and 2'. Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view on the line 2 z in Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional view on the line '0 o in Figs. 1 and 2, and Fig. 7 is a detail view of the catch or fastening for the outside shutter.
The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
Am the drawings designates the windowframe, which is constrncted wit-h a box or casing, 0, at the top, and with pockets or recesses B B at the sides, which may serve to accommodate the sash-weights, as the mechanism 'to be herein described will not interfere in the least with the operation of said weights.
D is a roller journaled in the sides of the box or casing O, transversely over the window-frame, and provided with a pulley, E, at one end. To the said roller are attached two flexible straps, F F, which may be of leather,
thin steel, or any other suitable material which shall 'be sufficiently strong and durable for the purpose intended. To the said flexible straps are bolted or otherwise secured transverse slats G G, of steel or iron, which form the shutter or blind. Other material than steel or iron may of course be used in the construction; but I prefer the materials named, as be- 1 ing light, durable, and practically burglarproof.
The sides of the pockets or recesses B B are provided with slots H H, into which the ends of the slats G project, thus rendering the dis- Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view placement of the shutter impossible. The bottom of the casing G likewise has a slot, I, for the passage of the slats when they are being wound upon, or unwound from the roller.,
At the lower end of the shutter is secured an angle-plate or slat, J, which, when the roller is being wound, serves to prevent the end of the shutter from passing through the slot I, which said slot is completely closed by-the said angle-plate, thereby obviating drafts.
At the upper end of the shutter I also provide a transverse pivoted slat, K, which, when the shutteris lowered, rests against and closes the slot I.
L is a shaftjournaled transversely in one of the pockets or recesses B, near the lower end of the latter, and having a crank or handle, M, by which it may be conveniently manipulated, and carrying a pulley, N, connected by a belt or band, 0, with the pulley E upoh the roller D. 4
It will be seen that by operating. the shaft 1 L the roller D may be turned so as to raise or lower the shutter, as may be desired.
P P are catches sliding transversely in the lower ends of the sides of the window-casing, and engaging slots Q in the lower or angle slat, J, of the shutter when the latter is lowered. The slides or catches Pare provided at their rear ends with handles R, by means of which they may be readily operated.
Journaled in the casing O, transversely over the window and rear of the roller D, is another roller, S, having a curtain, T, which extends through a slot, U, in the side of the casing (3. The roller S is provided atthe end opposite the pulley E on roller D with a pulley, U, connected by a belt or .band, V,'with a pulley, W, upon a shaft, X, journaled inthe lower end of the pocket or recess B, and having a crank or handle, Y, by means of which it may be readily turned so as to raise or lower the curtain.
From" the foregoingdescription, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood. By turning the appropriate cranks the curtain and shutter may be raised and lowered, and lowered, may be made securely fast by means ofthe slides or catches l 1 the shutter, when inexpensive, and it may be easily and conveniently manipulated.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The combination, with a wind0w=frame, constructed with a box or casing at the top,
and having recesses or pockets at the sides,
said casing and recesses being provided with slots, as set forth, of the roller mounted transversely in the said box or casing, and having flexible straps connected by transverse slats, and having at the lower end an angle-plate or slat and at the upper end a pivoted slat, all constructed and arranged to be operated by suitable mechanism, substantially as set forth.
JOSEPH VVRIGHTSMAN.
