CLAES J. ANDERSSON, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS.
DOOR oR WINDOW PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 537,741, dated April 16, 1895.
Application filed July 10, 1 8 94..
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLAEs J. ANDERSSON, a subject of the King of Sweden and Norway, and a resident of Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door or Window Protectors, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying draw ings, is a specification.
the line 3-3 shown in Fig. 1 Fig. 4 IBPI'B'.
sents a similar cross section showing the device in its locked position; and Fig. 5 represents a vertical section on the line 55 shown in Fig. 4.
Similar letters refer to similar parts whereever they occur on the difierent parts of the drawings.
In the drawings I have represented the invention as applied to a window, but it is equally well adapted for doors or other wall openings as may be desired without departing from the essence of my invention.
In the drawings, A, A, represent the uprights of a window frame on which A represents the upper horizontal portion and A the sill as usual.
B and B represent the windows as usual.
At or near the upper portion of the window frame are secured suitable brackets O, O, in which is journaled a metal roller D to one end of which is attached a hoisting cord or wire cl which may be suitably guided over pulleys E, E, as shown in Fig. 1.
In practice I prefer to connect all the rollers D- on the door or window openings throughout-the building to one single hoisting cord so that all the protectors on the doors or Windows in the building may be raised and lowered simultaneously. This however, may depend upon the construction and arrangement of the building, that is, if so desired, each door or window may have an independent raising and lowering device for its protector,
Serial No. 517,043- (N'o model.)
or two or more of the said rollers D may be connected together so as to be simultaneously actuated by a single cord when so required. To the roller D are secured two or more chains f, f, to which are attached at a suitable distauce apart a series of horizontal metal bars F, F, F, the ends of which are guided in grooved vertical guide plates G, G, secured to the uprights A, A, or other part of the door or window opening as may be most convenient and practical. To the inner portion of each grooved guide G is hinged a Vertical locking plate H having a series of notches or recesses h, h, adapted to receive the bars F, F, when in their lowest positions and when said locking plates are swung inward as shown in Figs. 4: and 5. Said locking plates are turned into locking positions by an automatic device as soon as the protector bars F F reach their lowest positions. For this purposeI have shown at the lower end of each grooved guide G a weighted rock lever I pivoted at i and having on its inside a cam surface or projection 1 adapted to be actuated by contact with the lowest bar F as it reaches its lowest position causing the upper end of the lever I to impinge against the hinged locking plate H whereby it is swung inward until the ends of the bars F, F, are received in the locking notches or recesses h, h, whereby said bars F, F, are held from being raised until the locking plates H, H, are released by the person in charge of the room or building.
Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of myinvention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim- In a door or window protector, the combi nation with a roller mounted in bearings, a series of chains connected to said roller and carrying a series of bars, and curved end guides for the bars,of pivoted, notched locking plates for locking the bars in position, and a weighted rock lever having a cam surface which is engaged by one of said bars, causing said lever to swing the pivoted notched locking plates into position to lock said bars, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 30th day of June, A. D. 1894.
OLAES J. ANDERSSON.
