Letters Patent No. 98,872, lated January 18, 1870.
IMPROVE!) SASH-'STOR AND HOLDER.
The Schedule referred to 1n these Letters Ptent and making part of the same.
To whom fit may concern.- Y
Be it known that I, J AMES P. LABAR, of Milford,
in the county of Oakland, and State of Michigan, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Sash Stops, Elevators, and Fasteners; and I dodeclare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,
and to the letters oi' reference marked thereon, and` .being a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a view of the arrangement of the stops and rihfuides in place, with the front of the window`` case removed.
Figure 2 is a view ofthe roller, cord, and weight, in place for elevating the sash.
Like letters indicate like parts in each figure.
The nature of this invention relates to an improved method of securing the sash at any desired lposition, and locking the same, so that it cannot be opened from the outside.
The invention consists in the new and n oyel arrangewhich are loosely pivoted at top, and fit into proper grooves in the window-frame.
F is a shaft, journaled into the frame, and, passing through the inner plate of the same, is provided with a knob, Gr, by means of which it is actuated.
Connecting-cords, H, chains, or other suitable devices are secured at on'e end to this shaft, while the other ends, passing over suitable sheaves or pulleys, I, are secured to the springs-tops O, which are fastened to the frame, and are provided with a projection or latch, a, which passes through the frame and the rib-guides E E', and engages with suitable holes in the side of the sash.
Upon one side of the latch is asmall'projection, b, which engages with a slot in the rib-guides E E', for the purpose hereinafter described.
K is la roller, so placed that it will revolve in the top of the frame; and
L is a cord, winding on the pulley (I, tol thc lower cnd of which is secured a metallic weight, M.
The sash may be connected to said roller hy means ot' cords, which wind or unwind on said roller; or the upper sash may be provided `with a suitable p'ieceot' netting, N, secured to the top of the sash and to the roller, in such a manner that whenthe upper sash is lowered, it will nnwindthe nett-ing from the roller, thereby preventing the entrance ot' mosquitoes or other insects.
The knob G should turnto the right to unlock the lower sash, and to the left to unlock the upper sash.
Rotating the shalt to the right or left,`allo\vs the window-sashes to be raised or lowered, for the latch a is withdrawn from its engagement with the edge of thesash, the projection b allowing this to be done without disturbing the rib-guides E 1".
Should it he desired to remove the sash, the shaft should be rotated a little further in either direction, when the projection b engages with the end of the slot in the guides, and withdraws it from the corresponding groove in the sash, when the lat-ter may be re moved. v
The connection of the sash to the rollers should be such that it may be disconnected readily, when desired.
I am aware of the invention of Clark Shaw, patented January 29, 1851, and of A. H. Boyd, patented Octoher 15, 1867, and claim no part of the invention of either of them.` y
'What I claim as my invention, and desire `to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement ofthe shaft F, knob G, cords H, pulley I, spring-stops O, and pivoted rib-guides E E', with the sashes B C, and frame A, when constructed and combined to operate substantially as herein described. g
' JAMES P. LABAR.
