Application filed April5,1904:. Serial No. 201,663.
To all whom, 7525777114/ cm1/cern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. SI-IECKELLS, of the oity of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain Improvements in a Combined Shirt and Cravat, of which the following is a specific-ation.
Figure l is an exterior front view of the upper part of what is generally known as a neglige shirt provided with a oravat after the manner of the presentinvention and showing the cravat before it is tied. Fig. 2 is a View similar to Fig. l, except that the oravat is shown as tied.
Referring' now to the drawings, l is the bosom, 2 the neolband, and 3 the collar.
The oravat consists of two strips 5 and 7 of suitable material, the one, 5, being sewed to the upper edge of the overlapped portion of the bosom l centrally of the opening 6 between the end of the collar and extending, when straightened, in a vertical direction, as shown in Fig. 1.
Zontally to the overlapped portion of the neekband 2, as shown in Fig. l. The strip 5 is provided with a buttonhole 9 near its end or in sueh position that when the said strip is turned down in the tying operation, hereinafter described, it will register with the button l0, as shown in Fig. 2 in dotted line.
The strip 7 is sewed hori- The overlapped portion of the bosom near to and under the upper button 12 is provided with a slot 13 of suoli size as will admit of the strip 5 being' easily passed through it in the tying' operation.
The eravat is tied after the neolband is buttoned, and to effect the appearance of a bow the strip 7 is folded twice upon itself and while it is held in a folded condition the strip 5 is brought down tightly over it and passed through the slot 13 and buttoned.
1 claim as my invention- In a shirt, the open bosom thereof provided with a slot near its upper end, oombined with a eravat formed of two separate strips, one of the said strips being sewed vertioally to the overlapped portion of the bosom, and adapted to be turned down and inserted through the slot in the bosom, and the other fastened horizontally to the overlapped part of the neokband, and adapted to be folded twice upon itself, and crossed by the vertical strip before the same is inserted in the said slot, substantially as, and for the purpose specified.
