To all whom it may concern,.-

Be it known that 1, ALBERT A. ABRAMS, a 'citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shirts, of which the following is a ful1,clear,and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.

My invention has relation to improvements in shirts; and it consists in the novel construction of shirt more fully set forth in the specification and pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of a shirt having my improved attachment. Fig. 2 is a rear view showing the elastic band and guiding-loop therefor. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail front view of the attachment or bosom extension. Figwtis as'ection on line 44 of Fig. 3. The object of myinvention is to provide the bosom of an ordinary shirt with a wing or lateral extension which can be retained in close contact with the body of the wearer, thereby preventing the bulging of the shirt-bosom, as is now generally the case, especially with stiff bosoms. v

A further object is to provide an extension the pull or tension on which shall distribute the strain on the bosom uniformly throughout the length of the latter.

In detail the invention may be described as follows:

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the body of the shirt, and 2 the bosom thereof. Projecting laterally from each edge of the bosom, but free from the body of the shirt, are wings or extensions 2', each provided with a lower short arm 3 and an upper long arm 3. in a head 6, projecting beyond the sides of the neck to an extent determined by the shoulders or oisets 7. The coupling-neck is provided at a point approximately in line with the shoulders 7 with a slit 8, adapted to receive the terminal clasps or hooks 9 of the elastic band 10, passed around the shirt, and adjusted at will by means of a slide 11, as is obvious. To insure the band remaining in place and prevent the same from sagging or working upward, I provide the back of the shirt with a guideloop 12, through which the bandfis passed. As seen from the foregoing,the extensions 2', (including the arms 3 3,) with their necks 5 and heads 6, are each'cut from a single piece of material, each extension being so secured to the bosom as to bring the line of tension or draft upon the extensions or, in other words, the point of connection between the hooks9 and the extensions in a line passing approximately directly under the armholes, as best seen in Figs. 1 and 2, where by reason of said disposition of the extensions the band 10 is caused to pass around the body of the wearer directly below the armholes of the shirt. This is not only the most convenient location for the point of coupling between the extension 2 and the elastic band, but by making the arms 3 3 of each extension-of unequal length and by disposing the longer arm above the shorter the strain upon the bosom is distributed to thebest advantage. Again, the neck 5 having a fcertain width, the draw or pull upon the extension is not confined to a single point, (as where the connection is made bya buttonhole and button formed, respectively, on the band and extension,) but the pull or tension is along lines parallel to the sides of the neck 5. To better take up this strain, I provide each neck with a rear reinforcing-strip 13, the base of which is secured to the rear of each extension, the free slotted end of the said strip being passed over and embracing the neck along the front side of the extension, (see Fig. 3,) the shoulders 7 preventing the neck of the extension from passing out of the slit of the strip. When the extension is under tension, the outer wall of the slit of the strip 13 bears against the base of the neck 5, the strain being partially taken up by the strip under the circumstances. Should the reinforcing-strips be sewed, however, along the front of the extension, as shown by 13in .Figs 5, 6, and 7, in which case the free edge IOO held down and the bosom thus prevented from bulging bypassing the suspender le between the extension and strips 13. The strip 13', therefore, when sewed on the front of the extension serves as a guide for the suspender for the purpose referred to, and though the omission of the band l0 under the circumstances is preferable it is not necessary.

To retain the bosom against Working up, I provide the base of the same with a sectional or partitioned tab or loop l5, through either opening of which the `button of the drawers can be passed.

It is to loe understood that I do not limit the present invention to any particular character of either bosom or shirt, and it is further obvious that the device may be altered in many details Without departing from the spirit of my invention. Thus while the extensions are herein described as separate pieces seWed to the bosom they may, in fact, be integral extensions thereof. So, also, can the hooks be made of Wire or of any shape or design so long as they remain permanently in place after having once been inserted through the slits of the necks 5.

Having described my invention, what I claim isl. In a shirt, a bosom, lateral extensions therefor, each extension comprising two arms of unequal length,the longer arm being disposed above the shorter, a coupling-*neck at the meeting bases of the two arms, an expanded head for the neck, a slit formed in the neck, an elastic band adapted to have its free ends coupled to the slotted ends of the necks, and a guide-loop at the back of the shirt for guiding the band, substantially as set forth.
