Laim Menem. 77,799, dan@ May 121868,
IMPROVEMENT In FLAME-Aramees;
TO'ALL WHoM IT MAY ooNoERN';
:Bel it known that L CHARLES B ROWNE, of-the city of Washington, in the county of Washington, andi 'District of Columbizuhave invented a 'Elame-Aerator, bcing'a newanduscful improvement for increasing the illuminating and'heating powersot' dame; 'andl do hereby declarethat the iolloLwing isa lfull-and exact descrip-v .tion thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, 'making part of this speciicatiomandto the letters of vreference marked thereon.
To enable othersskilled in 'the artto make and use my invention, I -proceedto describe its construction `and operation.
`My invention relates toproviding the burner ofan'y amein orattached to any device used for illuminatingl or heating purposes, with a verticahbar, grooved onits Vupper or exterior edge, which is attached to theburner,
and held in the required position in thedame, bymeanso't'l bands or other suitable attachment. Thcvertical bar is reducedto a thin or sharp edge on its interior edge orcurve.' By means ofthe groove in thevertical bar,
the interior of the amo is suppliediwithl air, and its illuminating and heatingpowers thereby ncreasedn'ithout" Aanyincrease in the quantityfof they material from whichthe flame is produced.
Figure 1,'in the' drawings hereto annexed, and. made part of' the specification, represents a front view of the invention. Y l I Figure 2, side view of the invention,
Figure 3, frontvieiv, reverse of -iig-1, illustrating operation.
Figure 4, side view, illustrating operation, and showingthe division of the dame.
Figure 5, section of" vertical bar at the-line a-c, fig. 1.
Figure 6, section of vertical bar at the l-irie t-c, liig.4 3.-
Itake the burner of any device used forkheating or illuminating purposes, an ordinary bat-wing gas# burner being selected for this illustration, and vby means of the bands'b b b, iig. 1, each of which being severed at one end, on opposite sides, from the `ilangesof the vertical bar a a ja,vat .the points c, igf2, I attach .the device to the gas-burnerg g g, fig. 3, so placing the vertical har a a'a' that its interiorcdge or curve,"l ce c, being sharper acute, hisects the flame hlt-I1, lengthwise, without'obstructing its dow upward, or causing it toilare, and so that the ends .or mouths'ee of the groovefff,vg. 2, are below the line of combustion, as shown in'g. 3. Theheat of the .amecauses a vacuum in the groovc'ff'iig. 4, the ends. or mouths of which, e'i-e, fig. 3, being below the line ofcombustion, afford free` entrancesinto lwhich the air rushes, as shown by the doublehcaded darts or arrows, and the darne, meetingab'ovo the vertical .bar a z z a, butnot `filling' the groove, (seeA rig.,4,) thelair follows the groove, radiating-off into, the ,interior o f 'the flame, as shown by the single-headed 'darts or arrows, fig. 3. y"Thusthe interior surfaces of theiame are supplied with air, @the processof combustion rendered more thorough, and the illuminating'and heating'powc'rs of the fiume increased, without any increase of the materialrequired in producingthe ame.' Y
In the construction of myinvention al single piece o'lmaterial maybe employedgBrass-is preferred, though any metal not eas'ilyfused may be used, since, being placed in the dame below the' line of perfect combustion, (see fig. 3,) and owing to the constant ow of air through the grocveffjgthe material does not 4become -very much heated.
I do notclairn a slotted tubehplaced in the ilame; but What I. do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pa-tent, is The wedge-shaped Abar a a a, gro'oved on its peripheryor exterior edge, and so placed on thc burner that 'theends or mouths of the groove arebelow the lowest' point of' combustion, substantially as and for -the purposes herein described.
