SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 777,240, dated December 13, 1904.
Application filed June 18', 1903- To aZZ whom, it vii/my concern.-
Be it known that I, IRA D. CADY, of Minneapolis, county of I-Iennepin, and State of Min- .nesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined VVhip-Socket and Rein-Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates especially to whipsoolrets provided with rim-holding attachments combined whip-sockets and rein-holders; and my invention consists of a tube or socket adapted to hold a carriage-whip in a convenient place and in an upright position when not in use, means for properly securing the same to the carriage, and an attachment thereto for holding the bridle-reins when not in the drivers hands, all of which is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, fully described in the following specification, and particularly pointed out in the subjoined claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of my whip-socket. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a top view thereof.
Similar letters refer to similar parts, Abeing the tube or socket and B the rein-holding attachment.
The tube A may be made either of wood or of metal, preferably the former; but the reinholder should be made of metal. The tube A is furnished with the clamps (0, adapted to secure it to the carriage, which clamps may be made of any suitable material and secured to the tube in any convenient way, their particular construction or attachment not being an essential feature of my invention. This tube A is provided intermediate its length with an opening 7), adapted to receive the lower portion of the rein-holder B, which opening is covered by a plate 0, to which plate the said. reinholder B is pivotally affixed.
The rein-holder B consists of the vertical lever (Z, fashioned substantially as herein shown, its lower portion 0? being fashioned concave on its inner face to conform somewhat to the rounded Whip, its upper portion (1 out- Serial No. 162.093. (N0 modeLl wardly curved to adapt it for the purpose of a rein-holder, its intermediate portion d laterally pierced to receive the pivot-pin n, which secures it to the plate 0, with a notchf', adapted to receive the liereinaftendescribed spring r The plate 0, to which the lever (Z of the reinholdcr B is pivoted, is rigidly affixed to the tube or socket A by m ians of screws and rivets. it is fashioned with the vertically-arranged late rall y-extend in g cars /l, between and to which the lever (Z is pivoted, with the opening 17, through which the middle portion of the lever (Z extends, and with the loop which serves to receive and to hold the lower ends of the SIHlng' securely in place. The spring g consists of a bar of resilient metal (as a wire) bent intermediate its length to an elongated U shape, the upper bent portion g of which rests in a notch of and impinges the lover (I and the lower bifurcated portion 7 of which extends (:lownward through the loop j of the plate a. This spring 7 operates to return the lever (Z to its normal position and to release the whip after it has been deflected by the interposed reins, as will hereinafter be set forth in its order.
The operation of my device is as follows: When used as a whip-holder only, the whip may be inserted therein or withdrawn therefrom Without interference on the part of the lever (1 but when used both as a whip-socket and rein-holifler the reins are forced in between the tube or socket A and the lever 1/, thereby deflecting the latter, forcing its upper portion (1 away from the tube or socket A and its lower power of inward and against the whip, thereby preventing its being withdrawn until after the reins shall have been, removed, when the spring g, through its reflex action, will return the lever (.Zto its'normal position, when the whip, thus released, may be withdrawn and reinstated ml lit/Trina.
It will be seen that the tube or socket A may be fashioned of metal, the cars /a. and the loop j be fashioned integral therewith, and. that therefore the plate a will become an unnecessary element of construction; but I prefer to make my tubes or sockets of wood and equip them with the plates, as shown.

In a Whip-socket, the combination, of the vertical cylindrical case, having an opening in its Wall, a plate adapted to cover the said opening, a lever pivotally aflixed to the said plate, one portion of which lever lies Within, and another portion of which lies Without the said case, a notch in the said lever adapted to re- IRA D.
