Be it known that I, Lilo PoYDRUs FAIsoN, a citizen of the` United States, residing at Golconda, in the county of Humboldt, State of Nevada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in I-Iorse-Detaehers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to horse-releasing devices.

One object ofthe invention is to provide an exceedingly simple, inexpensive, durable, and efficient device of the character stated.

Another object resides in the provision of a horse-releaser embodying such characteristics that in the event a horse or horses should become unmanageable it or they may be readily released from the vehicle.

/Vith these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit or sacricing any of the advantages of the invention. i

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view ofthe saine. Fig. 3 is a top plan view with the doubletree detached and the link turned upon its pivot. Fig. 4 is a detailed view of the pivoted link.

Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, the reference character 1 designates a tongue of a vehicle provided near its rear end with a recess 2, in which is fitted the base 3 of a casing 4, whose opposite ends are provided with alining perforations 5 for the passage therethrough of a trigger rod or bar 6, having one end enlarged and perforated, as at 7 and S, respectively. It will be seen that the enlarged end 7 is rectangular in cross-section, while the opposite end is circular in section, resulting in a shoulder 9 designed to rest normally in engagement with the corresponding end of the casing 4.

The reference character 1 indicates a d oubletree provided intermediate its ends with the usual perforation 11, in which latter fits the bolt 12, depending from the under face of Specification of Letters Patent.

The perforation 11 of the tongue also receives the upwardly-directed projection 15, disposed upon the tongue .in advance of the aforesaid casing 4. The ends of the bolt 12 and stud 15 therefor contact with each other within the perforation 11. This link 14 is pivotally connected to the tongue 1 in advance of the said projection 15 by means of a staple or other suitable pivot means 1 6, with its opposite end provided with a slot 17 designed for movement over theinverted-U-shaped guide 1S, through which latter the trigger-bolt() guided. p

A plate 19 is designed to rest normally over the guide 18 by reason of the central slot 20 of the former engaging over the guide. The pivoted link 1.4is designed to rest over this plate 19 with its slot 17 over the said guide 18 with the free extremity of one end of the trigger-bolt 6 engaged in the guide to retain the plate 19 and the inner end of the link 14 over the guide against the action of the helical spring 21 seated in the recess 22 ofthe tongue between the said projection 15 and the guide 1S. The plate 19 is provided with perforations 23 and 24 at Vits ends, there being a chain 25 connected in the perforation 23 and with the clip 26 of the doubletree 10 with another chain 27, connected in the perforation Z4 of the plate 19 and with another clip 28 of the doubletree.

From the foregoing it will be seen that the doubletree is held firmly in proper position with reference to the tongue for the attachment thereto of the draft appliances in the usual manner. However, by reason of my peculiar mounting and disposition of the doubletree with respect to the tongue, it is possible to release the animals in the event that they should become unmanageable. In order to accomplish this quick release of the frightened or unmanageable animals, I secure a chain 29 in the aforesaid perforation 8 of the enlarged end 7 of the trigger-bolt 6. This chain 29 is arranged to extend over the dashboard of the vehicle, the dashboardv and. vehicle not being shown, so that the occupant of the vehicle may control the same. Hence a quick jerk or pull upon the chain 29 will slide the trigger-bolt 6 against the action of the helical spring 30, encircling the bolt within the said casing 4 from engagement with the guide 18. ger-bolt 6 from engagement with the guide 19 causes the link 14 and the plate 19 to become disengaged from the guide 18 through the instrumentality of the expanding action of the helical spring 30. In other words, as soon as the trigger-bolt is pulled rearwardly the helical spring 30 causes a quick upward movement ol: the link 14 and plate 19, thereby releasing the doubletree 10 from engagement between the link 14 and the tongue and also the plate from engagement with the guide 1S.

While I have described one means for exerting a rearward pull upon the trigger-bolt 6, it is to be understood that other means may be employed for the purpose, itl desired.

That is claimed isn 1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a tongue, of a plate hinged to the tongue and extending over said doubletree and arranged at one of its ends for the passage of a keeper, a keeper upon the tongue, a slotted plate arranged for disposal upon said iirst-named plate and receiving the said keeper therethrough, a bolt slidably mounted upon said tongue for engagement with said keeper above said plates, and connections between said last-named plate and said doubletree.

2. In a device of the character described, the combination with the vehicle-tongue and a doubletree, of a casing mounted upon the tongue, a spring actuated bolt werking through said casing, a link pivoted at one end to the tongue and provided at its opposite end with a slot, the link having an upwardlydirected bend intermediate its ends for engagement over the doubletree, a guide mounted upon the tonguein advance of the casing for the reception of the slotted end of said link, a plate provided with a slot for engagement over Said guide, flexible connections between the doubletree and the said plate, a spring mounted in the tongue beneath said link, and means constructed and arranged whereby a pull may be exerted upon the aforesaid bolt to release it from said guide and through it movement of the said link and said plate from over the guide to permit of a detachment of the doubletree from the tongue.

3. In a device of the class described, the combination with a tongue having a recess formed in its upper face, and a doubletree, of a plate hinged to said tongue and disposed above said doubletree, means for holding said plate in position toretain said doubletree upon the said tongue and for releasing the said plate, and a spring seated in said recess Vin said tongue and in engagement with the under side of said plate.

4. In a device of the class described, the combination with a tongue, and a doubletree, of a plate hinged to the said tongue, a pin carried by the tongue and extending upwardly therefrom, a second pin carried by the said plate and extending downwardly therefrom in position to abut the upper end of the first-named pin, the said pins being engaged through the said doubletree, means for holding the said plate in position to retain the said doubletree upon the tongue, and means for releasing the said plate.
