Description

I. L LAN DIS.
Devices for Detaching Horses. N0.\47,144. Patented Feb 3.1874.
WITNESSES. I JV V'EJV' TOR E 080M} M 1 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
ISRAEL L. LAXDIS, OF LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR DETACHING HORSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,144, dated February 3, 1874; application filed January 2, 1874.
CASE 0.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISRAEL L. LANDIS, of Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Device for Detaching Horses; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction andarrangement of a device for detaching horses from vehicles, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of a whiftle or single tree embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of one'end of the same; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of one end of the whiitletree, showing the trace attached.
A represents an ordinary whiftletree or singletrce, provided at each end with a ferrule, B, and pin 0, upon which latter the trace is placed. D D represent two lovers, pivoted on top of the whiftietree upon each ferrule B by means of a pin, a. The front end of each lever D is bent downward and rearward under the ferrule, and the lower end of the pin a passes through the same. The front bent end of each lever thus forms a loop or semicircle, D. G represents a leather strap passing Y through eyes I) b on top of the whiffletree a suitable distance from the ends. Each end of the strap Or is split or divided into two parts, h and h. The part h is attached to the rear end of the lever D, while the part 71 passes through an eye formed on the upper end of the pin a, and then through a hole in the end 'of the pin 0 to hold the trace 011 the pin. Another strap should be attached in the center of the strap G, and pass up within the vehicle, to be in easy reach of the driver. By pulling on this strap the ends of the strap Ur are pulled inward, drawing the parts h out of the holes in the pins 0, and the parts h at the same time turning the levers D on their pivot-s, so that the bent portions D thereof will force the traces off from. the pins, thus easily and effectually detaching the horse from the vehicle almost in an instant.
This form of device can be easily attached to any of the common whiffietrees now in use by simply perforating the ends thereof, and connecting the levers by the pins to. These levers can always be easily detached from the whit'fletree by simply withdrawing the pins.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the detachable bent levers I) I), the pins to a, and the strap G h I! with the whiftletree A, having pins G 0, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 10th day of December, 1873.
ISRAEL L. LANDIS.
