IMP-ROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR DETACHING HORSES..

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,143, dated February 3,1874; application filed January 2, 1874.

CASE A.

To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, IsRAEL L. LANDIs, of Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Device for Detaching Horses; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this speciiication.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a device for detaching horses, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the saine, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a plan view of a whiffletree ein- .bodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective View of one end ofthe whiifletree, showing the trace in position and my device attached to the whifiletree.

A represents an ordinary whiiile or single tree, to be pivoted in the center in the usual manner, and .provided at each end with a ferrule, a, andpin, b, upon which latter the trace B is to be attached. At the outer end of each ferrule a, on the rear side of the single-tree, is

pivoted a lever, C, the front end of which is forked, and passes over the pin b-that is, one prong above and the other below the pinclose to the end of the single-tree. D represents a leather strap, passing through eyes or loops d d on the rear side of the whitlietree, a suitable distance from each end of the Whittletree. Each end of the strap D is slit lengthwise in two parts, h and h', the part 7L passing through an eye-screw, f, on top of the singletree, and through a hole in the end of the pin vb, to hold the trace on said pin in the usual C on their hinges, so that their front forked ends will force the traces o of said pins, and thus detach the horse from the vehicle.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination, with the single-tree A and pins b b, of the forked levers C C, hinged to the rear of the whifetree, and the strap D, having its ends split to form the parts h h at each end, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth. l
