N. R. vSHEALY.
HORSE DETAGHER.
No. 291,787. Patented Jan. 8, 1884.
TATES ITE ATEN
HORSE DETACHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 291,787, dated January 8, 1884.
Application filed October 10, 1883. (No model.)
I0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NOAH R. SHEALY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pine Ridge, in the county of Lexington and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse-Detachers, of which the following is a specification, reference being hadtherein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has relation to improvements in devices for detaching horses from vehicles and the like; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim appended.
The invention has for its object to provide a cheap and simple means whereby horses may be quickly and easily detached from a vehicle without necessitating the handling of the traces or even the drivers leaving his seat. This object I accomplish by the means shown and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a representation of a side view of a portion of a single-tree, showing a trace attached, and in dotted line showing the latch raised and the trace disconnected; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central sectional view of the same.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A indicates a single-tree, and B a ferrule secured thereto in the ordinary manner. This ferrule is provided with an aperture, a, in which is secured the inner end of a spindle, b; but, if desired, this spindle may be made integral with the ferrule. The said ferrule is provi ded in its inner side with alongitudinal groove or recess, 0, in which is pivoted a latch, a fiat or spiral spring, (I, being arranged within the groove, as shown, with its free end bent upward and engaging the inner under side of the latch C.
D indicates a slidecuff, which is placed over the spindle b, and is provided with a transverse slot, 6, for the reception of the stop-pin f, which is secured to the said spindle I), to prevent the cuff from leaving the spindle when the former is released by the spring-latch O. The cuff is also provided with a shoulder, g, which is engaged by the jaw h of the springlatch 0 when the cuff is drawn back, as shown in Fig. 2, and also with a loop, i, for the passage of the cockeye of a trace.
E indicates a flat or spiral spring, which is secured at its inner end in the side of the ferrule, as shown, and its outer end bearing in the cuff D, or concealed between ferrule and cuff to push the same forward upon the spindle and disconnect the trace when the latch O is operated. The latch is also provided with a slot, 3, to receive a rope or strap which may connect with the latch at the opposite end of the whiffletree or single-tree, and then lead rearward within convenient reach of the driver.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the ferrule B, having the spindle b, of the slide-cuff D, constructed as described, the stop-pin f, latch 0, spring (1, and spring E, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
NOAH R. SHEALY.
