To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OSCAR E. ALBRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gallatin, in the county of Sumner and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse-Detachers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. Y
This invention relates to new and usefu improvements in horse detachers, the object of the invention being to provide an efiicient device capable of enabling a horse or other draft animal in the event of a run away to be instantly and completely detached from a vehicle to prevent injury to the same or to the occupant thereof.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a horse detacher which will include releasing devices for the traces and hold back straps.
A further object of the invention is to provide means whereby the above named connections between the horse and the vehicle to which the device is applied may be released simultaneously.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a horse detacher of the above character which possesses advantages in points of ethciency and durability, is inexpensive of manufacture and at the same time is simple in construction and operation.
With the above and other objects in view, this invention consists in the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the claims and sho-wn in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view illustrating the application of a horse detacher constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view; Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of the trace releasing device; Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the hold back receiving member; and Fig. 6 is a detail Y perspective view of the trace receiving member.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates the body of a vehicle having the usual thills 2 secured thereto. The thills 2 are connected by means of the usual cross piece and mounted thereon is the whiffletree 3. Secured to the thills at their medial portions are the hold back receiving Specification of Letters Patent.

members et. The hold back receiving members comprise a U-shaped member having its ends disposed at right angles and secured to the thills in any suitable manner. A sleeve 5 is integrally formed with one end of the body 4; and adapted to engage over the thill to securely hold the body member d against lateral movement. Formed integral at one end of the body and projecting outwardly therefrom are the spaced ears 6 which are provided with alined openings 7 adapted to receive the end of the reciprocating bolt 8. The bolt S is mounted within the openings 9 and mounted upon the bolt and arranged within the body member e is a coil spring 10 which is adapted to normally retain the outer end of the bolt within the openings 7. It will be readily understood that the hold back strap of the harness is adapted to be disposed between the ears 6 and securely retained therebetween by having t-he bolt pass through the loop of the holder. Thus upon the actuation of the bolt 8, the end of the same will be withdrawn fro-m the openings 7 in the ears V6 so as to release the hold back strap.
Secured to the cross piece 11 which connects the thills 2 is the bearing members 12 in which are rotatably mounted an actuating shaft 13, the ends of which are bent at right angles, as shown at 14, and suitably connected to the inner ends of the bolts 8 by means of the rods 15. The intermediate portion of the shaft 18 is provided with the upwardly extending loop 16 in which are slidably mounted the outer ends of the pivoted rods 17. The inner ends of these rods are provided with the loops 18 which are pivotally mounted upon the pins 19. The pins 19 are arranged across the recesses 2() formed in the rear side of the whiilietree 3. The extreme inner ends of the rods 17 are disposed in a direction opposite the outer ends and are loosely connected by means of the links 21 to the trace holding bolts 22.
Secured to the rear of the whifiietree 3 and arranged at each end thereof are the trace receiving members 23, the body of which consists of a substantially lJ-shaped member having a base plate 24 formed integral therewith and having its ends projecting at right angles and secured to the ends of the whifiietree in any suitable manner. @ne end of the base plate 24- is provided with an upstanding flange 25 which is spaced from one end of the body to form a suitable channel 2G in which the end of the trace is adapted to be arranged. rEhe body member is provided with alined openings 27 in whichY the bolts 22 are slidably mounted, the outer ends of the bolts extending across one end of the channel 26 and through the opening in the end of the trace. A coil spring 28 is mounted upon the intermediate portion of the bolt and arranged within the body member to normally retain the bolt in its locking position.
From the above it will be readily apparent that upon the rotation of the shaft 13, the outer ends of the rods 17 will be forced inwardly toward the whittletree so as to actuate the bolts 22 and withdraw the outer ends of the bolts from across the channel 2G and release the trace member. It will also be understood that upon the actuation of the shaft 13, the bolts S will be actuatedV Thus the.

In order to actuate the shaft 13 from the body of the vehicle, an intermediate shaft29 is rotatably supported within the bearings 30 which are secured to the front cross piece 31 of the vehicle and the ends of said shaft being bent substantially at right angles, as shown at 32, and loosely connected to the ends of the shaft 13 by means of the rods 33. rlhe intermediate portion of the shaft 29 is provided with an outwardly projecting arm 311- which is pivotally connected by means of a link 35 to the crank arm 36 formed upon the inner end of the operating shaft 37.`
The operating` shaft 3'( is provided at its outer end with a suitable hand lever 38 whereby the same may be readily actuated to rotate the shafts 29 and 13 to actuate the bolts 22 and 8 and release the hold back straps and the traces.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be readily apparent that should the draft animal become frightened and start to run away, the driver can quickly release the animal from the vehicle by pushing forwardly upon the lever 3S, thus rotating the shafts 29 and 13 which in turn will actuate the bolts 8 and 22 to release the hold back straps and the traces. lt will also be apparent that. when the draft animal is hitched to the vehicle, the hold back straps and the traces are securely held in position by means of the bolts 8 and 22 and said bolts are retained in their operative position by means of the coil springs 10 and 28. From the above it will be readily apparent that l have provided a simple and durable device which is simple in construction and can be quickly and readily operated to release the draft animal from the vehicle. It will also be apparent that the device can be manufactured at a comparatively low cost.
W'hile l have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope of t-he appended claims.

A device of the class described including a whifletree having recesses formed therein, pins extending across said recesses, rods having loops mounted upon said pins within the recesses, an actuating shaft, a loop carried by said shaft, trace holding bolts movably mounted upon the ends of said whiftletree, one end of said rods being connected with said bolts and having their Vother ends movably mounted within the loops on the actuating shaft, the ends of said actuating shaft being disposed at right angles, an operating shaft, means for rotating said operating shaft, and means connecting the operating shaft with ythe actuating shaft whereby rotary movement of the operating shaft will actuate said bolts and release the trace ends.
