IMPROVEMENT IN DRIVE-WELLS.
Vltln Steigende nfemt to in time tettits @nent Vmit. making satt-nf tige samt.
TO ALL WHOM'IT MAY CON CERN:
Be it known that I, THOMAS CONKA'LIN, otvRockford, in the4 county of Winnebago, and Stateof Illinois, have invented a new and improved 1 llfell-Drive ;Y and I do hereby declare that tbe following is a full and. exact description 'of the same, reference being had to the 'accompanying drawings, and tothe letters of reference marked thereon. l i
AThis inventipn consists of a well-drive with a detachable head, and enlarged filtering-surface, as will be hereinaftcrfully described. A
'.lo enable others to make and use my invention, I will 'now proceed to describe its construction and operation.`
A represents ai pieoeof metal pipe, in whichlthelong straight or spiral' slits a are cut at a proper distance a1-part, one'edge of'n'hieh j s turned-up tov form the lips .'a. At each endof. the pipe, upon the parts uncut, are
slipped the bands B,- of iron or other suitable material.A C represents the filtering-screen, made of any proper substance, with its entire surface perforated, which tits snugly around the bands B and lips c,.and is fastened securelyr to them# Dreprcsents the detachable' head, the lower'part'of' which is of'suitable shape for entering the ground with least resistance, and the'upper partof which is (lat, with 'the exception of. the projection d, which latter tsclosely Within the well-tubeA.V The largestcircumferenceof tbehead is somewhat greater than that .of the screen C, the object of. whichUis to cause the bore of the well to be enough-larger than thescrcen to allow of free movein'ent cf the tube-it` desired, and also to preventpressure and-injury to the screen. No fastening is made between the tube and the head, the projection fitting closely enough, however, to. prevent the head vfrom'droppiiig o' at any time byaccident, it being intended that if it should from anycause be necessary to withdraw tbe tube, the head should reniain in the ground, thus allowing the operation to be per` formed with ease. The upper part ofthe tube is -provided with a screw-thread, by which means joints ofpipe nre-added for any desired length. The screen being supported at regular intervals throughout its entire length, by being properly fastened to the lips It', and being also secured at the ends to the bands CB, great strengthv is obtained without the lossofany of the filtering-surface, the edges 'of the lips a being-attached 'between the lines of the perforntions.
By my combination I thus obtain the result desired, great strength, with the'. largest possible amount of filtering-surface.
1 do not claim the method of sinking wells by driving, but What I do claim, anddesire .to secure by Letters Patent, is- The 'pipe A, with.slits,a`, und lips a in combination with bauds Brand screen C, arranged as described.
