Description

@uiten tartes stwt -ffira HOWARD HARTLEY, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 72,488, dated .December 24, 1867.
IMPROVED METHOD 0F LINING HOSE. V
@the rlgehnls refsmt tn in tipseletter xtmiant making pitt uf tlgs'ame.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, HOWARD HABTLEY, of the city of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Method of Inserting Spiral Wire or Metallic Lining in Flexible Hose; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, andexact description of my invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and vto 'the letters offrei'erence .marked thereon.
My invention consists in the method .I employ for accomplishing this purpose, by which I am enaolerl to introduce the lining in a continuo-us piece, and in a perfect manner, in an entire hose, instead of inserting t-in sections as is usually done. v I
To ena-ble others to understand and. use my invention, I will proceed to describe it'by reference to the annexed drawings, wherein- Figure 1 represents a perspective vie-w of a portion of hose, together with the means I employ for introducing the metallic lining.
yFigure 2, a horizontal section of the hose, showing the position of' the lining when placed therein.
Figure 3, a cross-section.
All the drawings are lettered, and similar letters indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
To apply the lining in accordance with my plan, I take a cylindrical pole, A, of the required length and diameter, and wind around itspirally, at a constant inclination, a metallic: band, B, so arranged as to leave a like continuous groove, C, between each turn and the n extL This band B, I secure to the pole A by means of rivets S S or otherwise, thus forming a large screw, thebbdy being of wood, and the spiral flange or thread of metal. I then wind around the pole A, in the grooves C formed as above stated, a wire or metallic ribbon,-
D, and when done, I thrust the pole, so wound, into the hose E, and make fa'st one end of the wire or'metallic ribbon thereto, by passing a rivet, H, through a hole, J', made in the end for that purpose. I then remove the pole A by placing a. rod of `iron or wood in the opening T to turn it, withdrawing it asa screw, leaving the spiral metallic lining D inside.
Having thus briefly described my invention- I claim the herein described method of inserting and attaching spiral metallic lining to hose.
HOWARD HARTLEY.
