Description

grt-itch tartes atent` @fitta WILLIAM J. LEWIS AND HENRY W.OLIVER, JR.. 0F PITTSBURG, PENNSYL- VANIA.
Letters Patent No. 82,725, 'dated October 6, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN STRAP-BOLTS.
vTO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONGERN:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM J. Lewis and III-:Nur W. OLIvnn, Jr., of the ci :y ot Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and usefulImprovcment-n the Manufacture of Iron for Strap-Bolts; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and enact description thcreof, rei`er ence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
The nature of our invention consists in producing a new article of manufacture, to wit, rolling hars of metal so 'as to constitute a series of blanks for strap-bolts of the form hereinafter described.
To -enableothers skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In-the accompanying drawings, which form part of our specification- Figure 1 represents a top view of a. section of a. bar of iron, of our improved manufacture.
Figure 2 is a sido view of the same.
Figure 3 is a transverse section of the same, when cut through at line 1 of figs. 1 and 2.
Figure 4 is a. transverse section ofthe bar, when cnt through at lines 2 of figs. 1 and 2.
Figure 5 is a transverse section of the bar. when ont through at lines 3 of gs. 1 and 2. q
We form the bars by means of rolls, one of which is provided with a. groove or grooves, and recesses which correspond in form and size to the form and size desired for the strapbolts. Havingone of the rolls thus provided with a groove or grooves and recesses, we take a. round bar -ofA iron, as it comes from the ordinary rolls for forming ronnds,v and while it is in its heated condition, we pass it between thc rolls provided with a groove or grooves and recesses which corresponds to the yt'orrn desired for the strap-bolts, and thereby give to the bar the form represented in figs. 1 and 2.
In constructing strap-bolts, the bars are cut in suitable lengths, which cuttingmust depend on the judgment and desire of the'mechanc for the length ofthe screw on Athe lower end of the strap-bolt, anddepth of the wagon-bed'must be the guide for the lengths for cutting o thc iron for the strap-holt. The part marked A should, as a. general rule, bc cut or divided at the line marked 1. This part is provided, in the ordinary way, with screw-threads and screw-nut. The next point for cutting or dividing o` the bar is in part marked C. The dividing-line in this part will depend entirely upon the depth of the 'wagon-bed, or other purpose to which it may be applied. The part marked B is made in the form represented, for the purpose of obtaining strength in that part of the strap-bolt against which the greatest force or strain is brought to hear, which is always near the bottom of the wagon-bed. Experience has demonstrated the fact that the strap-bolt is broken o` more frequently in the part marked B, than in any other part of the strap-bolt. The rib e,on part B, and the general formpt' this part, as represented in the accompanying drawings, experience has proved to he the most desirabie form for strength and neatness of finish. A
The parts marked B and C are provided with screw or rivet-holes at such points as suit the taste and judgment of the mechanic.
The advantage of rolling iron out into bars of the form herein described and represented will be very apparent to all who manufacture strap-bolts for wagon-beds. It saves the labor and expense of forgingjas now practised. It makes n smooth and uniform strap-bolt, giving to the holt always strength where it is most needed,
and'also neutness of finish: 1 l
Having thus described the nature, construction, and operation of our improvement, what. we claiml as of our invention, is
A new article ofhmanufuctnrc, iron rolled to constitute a series of blanks, in bars, for strap-bolts of the form herein described.
