Description

UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
VILLIAM J. LEWIS AND HENRY W. OLIVER, JR., OF PITTSBURG, PA.
IMPROVEMENT IN STRAP-BOLTS FOR WAGON-BEDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 108,493, dated October 18, 1870.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM J. LEwIs and HENRY W. OLIVER, Jr., of Pittsburg, in
Vthe county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Strap-Bolts for W agon-Beds, Sto.; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
The nature of our invention consists in a new article of manufacture-viz., a strap-bolt conssting of a round part provided with screwthread and a screw-nut, a iiat part neXt to said round part, then a semi-oval part, the whole being formed of round iron by rolls.
To enable others skilled in the art to make our new article of manufacture, we will proceed to describe its construction.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of our specification, Figure l is a front or face view of our improvement in strapbolts. Fig. 2 is a side or edge View of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section at line g of Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a transverse of the bolt when cut throughat line h of Fig. 1.
After the iron has been given the desired forni in the rolls, it is then out to the desired length, and the round part, A, is provided with screw-threads C, screw-nut B, and in the parts marked D and K are made suitable openings (marked 1, 2, and 3) for screws or nails.
The strap portion of the bolt is made heavy and strong at and near the opening marked 1, for the reason that this part of the strap-bolt is subjected to the greatest amount of force and strain by the Weight of the load in the wagon acting or pressing against the sides of the wagon-bed; for be it observed that when the wagon-bed is loaded the upper part of the bed is very liable to be spread, and theresult is, a heavy strain is brought against or on the strap-bolts at or near the point indicated by the lines marked g in Figs.- l and 2.
The advantages of our improvementin stra-pbolts for wagon-beds are to be found, rst, in the form or shape of the article, resulting partly from the use of round iron in the preparation of the blanks described in our patent of October 6, 1868, the shape being such that the metal is properly proportioned at different points to the strain to which it is liable, and suoli, also, that the screw-threads may be out upon it without the labor and expense of previously forging down and rounding the end, as has heretofore been customary; and, second, in the smooth and nished appearance of the article and the uniformity of size and configuration..
Having thus described the nature, construction, and operation of our improvement, what we claim as of our invention is- A strap-bolt consisting of a round, flat, and semioval part, as indicated at the points marked A, D, and K, as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
WM. J. LEWIS. HENRY W. OLIVER, JR.
