To all whom it may) concern:
Be it known that I, Hownnn H. SHnL'roN, a citizen of therUnited States, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit andv State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Dies for Forming Cotters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in dies for forming cotters from suitable blanks, and the object of the invention is to provide a die by which cotters completely fashioned may be formed thereby.
Briefly, the manufacture of cotters heretofore has necessitated the employment of a plurality of operations or manipulations on the blanks before a marketable cotter was produced, each operation requiring the use of a special die or a special tool therefor,
, but by the use of the die which forms the subject matter: of this invention, cotters faultlessly formed are produced in one operation by simply forcing suitable blanks through them.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel con struction, combination and arrangement of parts constituting the invention to be here inafter specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part hereof wherein is shown the preferred 1 embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the matter hereinafter claimed.
In the drawings in which similar reference numerals indicate like parts in the different figures, Figure 1, is a perspective view of a die embodying this invention; Fig. 2, is a similar view of the die and "a blankinposi- ,tion with respect to the die and readyto be forced therethrough; Fig. 3, is a perspective view of a portion of one, member of a die when the die is made up of a plurality of parts; Fig. 4, is a view of a die anda blank, the latter being positionedin thedie and partially formed; and, Fig. 5, is a view of a finished cotter produced by the die shown in Fig. 1.
The die forming the subject matter ofthis invention, is for ease of manufacture preferably made up of two members 1 and 2 adapted when assembled by being clamped together, to form a complete die. Eachof the members is fashioned in the general form, of a rhombohedron, and suitable means, such for instance, as dowel-pins, (not deemed necessaryto illustrate) are employed to securetheir perfect registration, but on the other hand the die may be formed of a single piece of material with the die open- ,ing solely in the single piece without de- -parting from the scope of thismvention.
The members 1 and 2 are preferably provided withfront and rear parallel faces 3 and i and inclined parallel upper and lower faces 5 and 6. The top and bottom faces are preferably provided with portions 7 beveled with respect to the inclined portions and lying in planes perpendicular to the front and rear faces 3 and 4. In the upper and lower faces 5 andb are formed die openings which may beiin the case where the .die is made up of two portions, as shown in the drawings, partially formed in each of the members, and are numbered respectively 8 and 9, the side walls of which are preferably approximately parallel with the exit end. 10 of the opening 8 terminating at the rear face 4i and with the corresponding portion 11 of the opening 9 in the, lower face 6 terminating at the front face 3 so that'the openings are reversedlyarranged at opposite ends of the die body and in opposite faces thereof, but with the axes of the openings approximately parallel with each other and perpendicular to the front and rear faces 3 and 4. The positioning of the die opening at the opposite ends of themembers is simply done for the sakeof economy, so that both ends of the die may be utilized: by merely reversing the die before use and also oppositely-disposed grooves 16 so fashioned that when the members are clamped toblock or piece of metal.
Irrespective of the question of the formation of the die, whether of two members or of a single piece, or whether the die member is provided with die openings at opposite ends, the die is provided with a forming portion consisting of an approximately cylindrical opening extending throughout with the entrance end of the opening outwardly flared and having its origin in one inclined v end at approximately the latters junction with one side of the member and its exit end terminating at the opposite side at Y a point removed from the end thereof. The side walls formingthe openings are approximately parallel andthe exit end being of a size approximately corresponding to the rounded'head portion of the cotter to be made'therein. Extending from the ends of the body portion of the die to and communicating centrally with the exit ends of the die openings are slots 18, which are produced by cutting awaysufficient portions of the narrow necks of metal existing between the ends of the die and the exit termini 10 and 11 of the openings. 'It is pointedoutthat because of the fact that the die openings are formed in the ends of the die which are provided with the inclined faces 5 and 6, the
walls around the entrance or flared ends of the openings are elliptically fashioned and the inner edges (meaning the edges toward the center of the body portion) extend to the junction of the inclined faces 5. and 6 with the faces 3 and 4 and from thence the edges of the inner walls of the die openings are inwardly inclined both transversely and longitudinally upon curvilinear lines- In practice,'a suitable blank 17 is supported by means not necessary to describe here, with its longitudinal central line in alinement'withthe axis of one of the die openings and arranged with the body portion thereof at right angles with respectto the axis. A plunger 12 having a reduced end 13 and a shoulder 14 and arranged in alinement with the axis ofthe die opening, is employed for forming the cotters from the blanks. In
this operation the reduced end 18 of the plunger 12 constitutes a mandrel about which the eye-of the cotter is bent and the shoulder l t-is arrangedto constitute an abutment to engage the side of the cotter blank at its medianportion and drive the blank through the die opening. A device for making cotters including a die comprising a body portion in the general form of an obtuse rhombohedron, said body portion provided in the inclined faces thereof with an approximately cylindrical opening having an outwardly flared entrance and extending therethrough and terminating in the exit or discharge "end, and further provided with a slot extending from an end of thebody portion to and communicating with the exit or terminus of said opening, the side walls of said opening constituting means for bending a suitable blank at right angles to its line of movement through said die during the forming operation in combination with a plunger adapted moved from the end of the body portion,
