Description

W. R.` RIOUX. SCREW CUTTING DIE.l APPucAnoN FILED DEc.a. 1916.

VILLIATJI E. ROUX, OF MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA.
SCREW-CUTTING DIE.
specification of Letters Patent. Patented Eilat'. 2'?, i917.
Application led Becember 8, 1916. Serial No. 135,791.
To all wwm z'z may concern:
Be it hn' vn that l, WiLLiAM R. RIOUX, a subject oi the ling ot Great Britain, residing at lifontreal, Province of Quebec, lCanada, ha ve invented certain new and useiful improvements in Screw-Cutting Dies; and l do hereby declare tnat the following is a iull7 clear, and enact vdescription of the inwentien7 such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make anc use the saine.
rlhe present invention relates to a die and more particularly to a screw cutting die dapted to cut left or right handed threads upon a bolt or rod, and an object of the present invention is to provide a die of this character whereby the die cutters or chasers may be easily and readily projected to the desired angle for giving clearance and the heel oi1 the chasers may be projected radially toward the center or the die which will eliminate any undue friction and thereby increasingthe ei'iiciency ot the die.
YWith the above and other objects in View which will hereinafter appear as the description continues, the invention consists of the novel `features of construction, combination and iormaion of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and parti cularly pointed out in the appended claims.
ln the accompanying drawings has been shown the simple and preferred forni oit the invention, it being, however, unde 1stood that no limitation is necessarily made to the ,preoise structural details herein exhibited, but the right is hereby reserved to any changes, alterations or modifications to which recourse may be had that come within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacricing the eiliciency of the same.
ln the accompanying drawings:
Figure l is a plan view of the die embodying the present invention; and,
Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the saine taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1 in the direction of the arrows as shown.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings wherein like and corresponding parts are designated by similar reference characters throughout the sev eral views.
rlhe die forming the subject matter of. the present invention comprises a ring preferably made of a single piece of metal having the screw chasers formed integraltherewith, but at the saine time adapted to be adjacent to the desired angle without impairing the strength or elliciency oi' the die.
The numeral l indicates a ring which may b e split as L so that it may readily lit any chuck or case and projecting radially toward the center of the ring and formed integral therewith are the screw chasers which are shown preferably three in number. Each of these screw chasers comprises a toot or web portion 3 which are formed to give to the chasers the required strength, and it is,of course, to be understood that as great an amount of metal may be left to enlarge these foot portions, as is desired. Forni-ed within the outer faces of the foot portions 3 are the laterally extending thread cutting edges l. Formed within each oi the web portions 3 ci the chasers are the diagonally extending slots 5 which extend through the web portions having an enlarged aperture o formed at the foot thereof and :termed within the web portions adjacent the outer ends of the slots is an enlarged circular aperture 7 through which a. tapered pin, screw or other peening device 8 may extend.
The diagonally extending` slots 5 do not in any manner impair the strength of the Vweb portions of the chasers7 but by inserting a peening device such as a. tapered plug within the opening 7 the screw cuttingV edges will be thrown to the desired angle so as to give the eye oi' the die the required clearance and at the same time the foot portions of the cutting edges will be moved readily toward the center of' the die.
lWhereas in the drawings l have shown a substantially truncated conical pin, it is, of course, to be understood that this pin may be in the nature ofv a. screw adapted to be threaded within the aperture 7 or any other suitable tapering peening device may be used.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A die of the character described comprising a body portion, a plurality oi screw chasers formed integral therewith, the base portion of said chasers having diagonally extending slots formeel therein and means adapted to be. inserted within said slots for moving said chasers to different angles substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. ln a die of the character described comprising a ring, a plurality of inwardly projecting screw chasers formed integral therewith, the base portions of .said screw chasers each having a diagonally extending slot therein and having one end terminating at one side of said screw chasers, and tapered plugs adapted to be inserted within said slots for the purpose specified.
8. ln a die of the character described cornprising a split ring, a plurality of chasers formed integral therewith, each of said chasers comprising a web portion, each of said web portions having a diagonally extending slot formed therein and extending` transversely throughout each web portion, and aytapered pin adapted to be inserted within each of said slots adjacent the open ends thereof substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. ln a die oit' the character described comprising a split ring, a plurality of radially extending screw chasers orrned integral therewith, each of said screw chasers comprising a web portion having screw cutting edges formed at and extending transversely across the outer ends thereof, said web portions each having a diagonally extending slot formed therein and extend ing transversely throughout each web portion, the inner end of each of said slots terminating in an enlarged aperture, the opposite ends of said slots each having an enlarged transversely extending aperture corninunicating therewith, and a tapered pin adapted to be inserted within each of said enlarged apertures substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my Y hand.
WILLIAM RIOUX.
