FREDERICK F. CLARKE, OF FRANKLIN, PENNSYLVANIA.
TOOL-HOLDER AND SECURING DEVICE FOR SAME.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 2, 1912.
Application filed August 1, 1910. Serial No. 574,901.
T all whom it may concern:
Be. it known that I, FREDERICK F. CLARKE, citizen of the United States. residing at Franklin. in the county of-Venango and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Iool- Holders and Securing Devices for Same, of which the following is a specification.
The object, construction and application of my improved tool-holder and securing device for same are herein described with suilicient clearness to enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. v
The accompanying drawings show one way in which my invention may mechanically expressed, the respective views whereof are as follows: I
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved tool-holder. Fig. 2 is a side view partially in section of a turret head for a boring mill. equipped for the reception and securing of my tool-holder. The section in this view is taken on line II-II of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a front view of my complete device. Fig. 4 is a side view partially in section of my improved tool-holder and sockethead or turret-head in which the same is secured. The section in this view is taken on line IV-IV of Fig. 3.
Itwill be. readily noted from the drawings that I have shown my improved toolholder in combination with a turret-head such as is commonly used on various machine tools, and one adapted for carrying a number of tools, but the-drawings are illustrative merely, and not intended to show the only way in which my improved toolholder and securing device can be mechanically embodied.
The object of my invention is to provide a tool-holder for use in boring and turning mills. Where it is necessary that the tool shall he very firmly and rigidly held in position and prevented from turning, especially when heavy, roughing cuts are being taken.
The construction of my improved tool- 'holder. as shown in the drawings. is substantially as follows: I employ a'tool-holder such as is .commonly employed for holding toolsin boring mills. and upon one face thereof I provide a primary shank 1, and in close proximity to shank 1 I supply a secondary shank 2. which extends parallel with shank 1. lVhile I have shown considcrahle variation in the diameter and length of these shanks, the relative size thereof is immaterial. In any suitable head, such as a turret-head 3, I form a primary socket 4 for the reception of shank 1, and a secondary socket 5 for the reception of the shank 2. Interseeting one of said sockets-preferably the primary socket-is a binder-ping socket in which is placed a binder-plug 6,
adapted to bear upon the periphery of shank i. to prevent a longitudinal movement of the sharks within the sockets, and to'hold the same firmly in position. Passing through plug (3 is a stud '7 having a nut 8 adapted to bear upon the outer end of said binder-plug, and by means of which said plug ma; be caused to hear firmly against the shank i.
I claim:
In a tool-holder and securing device for same, the combination with a body having a primary socket and a secondary socket, of a tool-holder, a primary shank and a second,- ary shank upon said holder. arranged to removahly occupy said sockets respectively, a. binder plug socket intersecting one of said sockets, a binder plug occupying said plug socket and arranged to bear upon one of said shanks for the purpose of preventing IllB longitudinal movement thereof.
In testimonv whereof I atlix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FREDERICK F. CLARKE.
