Letters Patent'No, 96,251, dated, October 26, 1869.
IMPRVED SERIES OF DIES FOR FORMINC-i- KIG--BOLTS y The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making paxt of the same To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, F. B. MORSE, of Plantsvill'e, in the county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Dies for Forging King-Bolts; and I -do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, vto be a' full, clear, anflexact description ofthe same, and which said drawings constitute part of this speciiication, and represent, in-

This invention relates to an improvement in the manufacture ofthe article of carriage-hard ware, known to the trade as king-bolts, and it consists ina series of dies for forging the said bolts.
The blank, as seen in lig. 10, Vis forged in the usual manner. The head split, then heated, is placed into the die A, iig. 2, when the follower, or other part, B, of the die is struck on to it, the central portion a. passing down into the slit and opening the ends, as seen in fig. 11, partially forming the head, then removed to the die O, iig. 4, which is formed so as to spread the head of the bolt and shape the outer surfaces of the two ends above thehead.
Set into this die, the follower or other part, D, is struck on to the blank forming it, as seen in fig.v l2, and spreading the head, as denoted at d d, tig. 14. Then the bolt is placed into the trimming-die E, tig. 6, and the follower F struck thereon to cut away the tinfo'r surplus metal. Then the neck ot' the bolt is formed up to thebroken line, fig. 13, by means of the dies commonly used for this purpose, or other suitable dies.
To complete the head above that line, the bolt is placed into the die G, tig. 8, which is constructed as seen in g. 9, lso that when thel bolt is placed therein, a movable part, H, ofthe die is placed in against the neck, to complete the die -around curved part of the neck previously formed, so that in the completed die,
that vpart of the neck above the said broken line is formed, the movable part H permitting the insertion and removal ofthe bolt from the die, when the bolt has thus lbeen placed in the said die. Then the follower or other part, I, of the die lis struck vthereon and the head is nishcd. v
rlhus, by these several operations, the holtjs iinished complete, including the neck.
By preference, I employ the opening-dies, shown in figs. 1 and 2, yet Vit will be evident that the dies in figs. 3 and 4 may be employed as the opening-die, and thus dispense with the opening-die.
In application A, filed in even date herewith, the dies shown in figs. 3, 4, 5, and 6, are made the subject of the saidapplication for patent, but in that opera-V tion the neck is not complete.
I claim, as my invention?- lhe series of dies vC D, E F, and G I, constructed .as described, to form king-bolts for carriages.
