TOALL WHM IT MAY ('JONCVERN:4l v
yBe it known that I, F. B. MORSE, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new improvement in Dies for Forging' Carriage-shackles; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in` connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters et"4 reference marked thereon,
to be a full, clear, and exact description of thesame, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
Figure`1, a perspective view of the Vupper part of the first die inverted. Figure 2, a perspective view of the under part of' the die. Figure 3ra perspective view of the blank in the forni in which it leavesthe first die, fullV size.v
Figure 4, aperspecti've view of the under part of, the second die.
Figure 5, a perspective view of the upper part of the second die'inverted,
Figure (i, n top view of the shackle after the first operation in the second die,l full size.
Figure 7, the same after the second operation. v
Figure 8, the same afterthe third vand last operation.l
Figure 9, the shackle complete. i.
Heretofore carriage-shackles have been formed by welding the ears to the clip. vThis has required the riveting of the two parts together, .or otherwise securing them, preparatory t-o welding. 4The process of weld` ing, and that preparatory thereto, costs no inconsiderable 'amount of time, and this taken with the fact that the two parts must be rsvt forged` separately, and that after being welded the ears must be turned up.` -This turning uplrequires a peculiar-operation in order to form a square hack-shackle. p
By my inventionlthe diiculties attending the forming of a square back-shackle, and much of tho time and labor required in forging theold shackle, are saved, and a shackle produced superior to the old, in that itis formed fromsolid metal without welding or bending; and in order to the better understanding-of my inventiongras well'as to enable others to construct the saine, I will proceed to a description asillustratedin the accompanying drawings. t Y p t A is vthe rst or breaking-down die. -The upper or opposite part, B, being of the same form, simply breaks down the metal each side of the head C, (see iig. 3.) Nest the blank is placed in the part D, beneath the part E of the die, and there brought to the proper length. Thence itis placed in the die F, into which the` part G'A of the upper part falls andstrikes the head C o f the shank H into the form denoted in' fig. 3. Thence the blank is removed andthe end I rounded between the dies Jand K, whichiinishesthe operation by the first dies leaving the blank, as seen in fig. 3. Thence the blank is taken to the second die, seen in fig'. 4, and the end I of the blank insertedinto lthe holen in the'irst part of the said die. In the central-'part of this portionof the die a convex block, L, is set, and in the upper part a corresponding convex block, M, and the upper part formed so as tonllow free passage of the die down over the shank H. Thus the" die strikes upon the head C and forms the head, as seen in fig. 6. Removed :from the rst part ot' the die, it is inserted into the second part, the end I' entering the h ole @Landa block, N, in the lower part, and a corresponding block, O, in the upper partrotlthe die, strike the head into the: form seen in iig. 7, thence removed andinserted in like manner into the third part of the die, entering 'the holef. The block'P in the lower part, and block It in the upper part of this die, are nearly square, so as to strike the head into the form seen in iig. 8. 'This operation leaves a web' or {im-S, across the head at the meeting ofthe dies, as seen in fig. 8. `{'Thence' the blank is taken lto the milling machine'or' trimming dies, Where the said web or iin is' removed and' the shackle finished, as seen in fig. 9. 'Thus I have formed al square backhshackle from solid metal Vat a single heat, without welds or bending, and
therefore have produced a shackle cheaper, in that itis produced'at not exceeding one-half the expense of the common shackle, andiybetter, in that it is produced from sol-id metal. l
I do` not wish to beunders'tood as broadly claiming a shackle formedfrom a single piece.v
Having thus fully described my manner of producing .such a shackle, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi The method hereinidescribed of forming the square-backed' shackle-blank described and represe ted by fig. 8 of, the drawings. v
t y F. B. MORSE.
