SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 770,031, dated September 13, 1904.

Be it known that I, J AMES Y. WERRICK, a citizen of the United States of America, and
' a resident of St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hats Provided with Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to receptacles for use in the crowns of hats, and has for its primary object to provide a convenient and inconspicuous holder for carrying papers, liquid, food, or other small articles. It may also be used when properly filled for cooling or warming the head of the wearer.
To these ends my invention consists of a receptacle with a top so formed as to fit within the crown of a hat and having a concave base conforming to the head of the wearer and means for opening and closing said receptacle.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a vertical cross-section of a hat, showing my improved receptacle, also in cross-section, in the crown thereof; and Fig. 2 is a perspective view, partly in section, of said receptacle removed from the hat.
In the drawings, let A represent the receptacle, which may be made of any suitable material, such .as thin sheet-aluminium. The top B and base 0 are curved, respectively, to fit snugly into the crown of the hat D and pass over the head of the wearer. The top and base are connected at their edges at E. As the parts appear from the exterior, B is convex and C, to a less degree, concave, thus forming the chamber F. The convex wall has an opening H, (near the center of the crown D of the hat,) which is closed by the cover I. The sweat-band J of the hat laps over the meeting edges E, and thus holds the receptacle in place and protects the head of the wearer from contact with any rough or hard surface on said receptacle. The outer surface K of the base C may also be covered with a lining of cloth L or other suitable material.
In use the receptacle is filled and the cover closed over the opening. The sweat-band of the hat is turned out and the receptacle slipped into the hat and the band turned over the edge E, as shown in Fig. 1. The hat is then worn with the receptacle in its crown.
The receptacle may be made in various sizes to fit different-sized hats, and while I have shown it applied to a so-called derby hat, it is obvious that its shape may be changed to fit any other style of hats. The receptacle is particularly adapted to carry lunches or liquid refreshments.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is
1. A hat provided with a concavo-convex receptacle, having its upper face shaped to fit the inner dome of the hat, its lower face spaced therefrom and varying slightly in contour from the upper face thereof, the two faces meeting in the lower edge of the receptacle to rest between the hat-sweat and hat-body, as set forth.
2. A hat provided with a concavo-conve'x receptacle having its upper face shaped to fit the inner dome of the hat, its lower face at a spaced distance therefrom and conforming in contour substantially to the upper face there- .of, the two faces meeting substantially in the lower edge of the receptacle, an opening in one of said faces, and a cover over said opening.
8. A hat-receptacle provided with concavoconvex surfaces B and C and having its upper face B shaped to fit the inner dome of the hat and its lower face 0 at a spaced distance therefrom, the two faces meeting in the lower edge E of the receptacle to rest between the hatsweat and hat-body, an opening H in one face of the said receptacle, and a cover I over said opening.
