SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 762,483, dated June 14, 1904.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL EvERE'rT LOM- BARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fall River, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Wrench, of which the Ifollowing is a specication.
This invention relates generally to w renches, and more particularly to that class thereof known as sliding-jaw nut-wrenches, and the object of the invention is to provide an improved construction whereby the adjustment ot' the sliding jaw can be quickly and easily accomplished and when once adjusted will be securely held against backward movement.
With these objects in view the invention consists in the novel features 'of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, all of which will be fully described'hereinafter and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming part of this speciiication, Figure` 1, is a perspective view of a wrench constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View of the same. Eig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 3 3 of Eig. 2. Fig. 4 is a view showing the fixed jaw and shank in elevation and the movable jaw and sleeve in section. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the sliding jaw and sleeve. Eig. 6 is a detail perspective view of one of the lockingplates carried by the sleeve. Eig. 7 is a detail perspective view of the lever-rods employed for disengaging the locking-plates from the shank. y
In constructing a wrench in accordance with my invention I provide a fixed jaw A, which is rigidly connected to the shank B,
said shank terminating in a handle portion B'. Sliding upon the shank B is the Xed jaw C and integral sleeve D. The shank B is constructed with parallel grooves B2 in the opposite sides, and the face of the shank upon opposite sides of these grooves is serrated or provided with ratchet-teeth B3, and it will be'V noted by reference to Fig. 4 that the teeth upon opposite sides of one of the grooves alternate with the teeth upon the opposite sides of the other groove, the purpose of which will appear hereinafter. Openings D are produced in the opposite sides of the sleeve D, and locking-plates E are arranged in said openings, there being two plates in each opening, each plate being grooved longitudinally, as shown at E', and upon opposite sides of the groove the inner face ot' the plate is serrated or provided with ratchet-teeth E2. These plates E are held in the openings D by means otl springs F, rigidly connected at one end to the sleeve D. The ratchet-faced plates are adapted to engage the ratchet-teeth upon the sides of the shank, thereby locking the sliding jaw upon the shankVI and inasmuch as the teeth B3 upon the opposite sides'of the upper and lower grooves B2 are arranged alternately it is obvious that avery fine adjustment can be had. The teeth are so constructed that the jaw C can be pushed along the shank toward the fixed jaw A; but the engagement of the ratchet-teeth will prevent any backward movement of the jaw. For the purpose of disengaging the ratchetplates I employ the lever-rods G, there being one rod for each plate, said rods resting in the grooves B2 and turned upwardly at their forward ends, as shown at G', said upwardly or outwardly turned end resting in the longitudinal groove E, as most clearly shown in Fig. 3. Each lever-'rod is bent, as shown at G2, providing a fulcrum u pon which the leer is adapted to' turn, the outer or rear ends of each pair ot' lever-rods being connected by means of a cross-bar H, having a recessed boss H, in
which the thumb and finger can lit for the purpose of easily manipulating the wrench. The grooves E are in alinement with the grooves B2, and ample space is thereby provided for the slight -movement of the leverrods necessary to disengage the ratchet-plates from the ratchet-teeth oI the shank. The springs normally hold the plates in engagement with the shank, and for the purpose of disengaging said plates, so that the sliding jaw can be adjusted rearwardly or opened, it is only necessary to press the cross-bars H inwardly toward the shank, and the levers, rocking upon the portions G2, will press the plates E outwardly, and the jaw can then be adjusted to the proper position, and the moment pressure is removed from the levers the springs will throw the plates back into engagement with the shank.
Having thus fully described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isw
1. A wrench comprising a liXed jaw and shank, a sliding jaw andv sleeve, said sleeve having openings in the sides, spring-actuated serrated plates arranged in said openings, and the levers adapted to throw the said plates outwardly, as set orth.
2. A Wrench comprising a fixed jaw and shank, said shank being' grooved longitudinally upon the sides and provided with ratchetteeth upon opposite sides of each groove, a sliding jaw and sleeve, the sleeve having openings in the sides, spring-actuated serrated plates arranged in said openings, and the levers adapted to slide in the grooves in the shank, and press the serrated plates outwardly, for the purpose set forth.
3. A wrench comprising a fixed jaw and shank, said shank being grooved longitudinally upon the sides and provided with ratchetteeth upon opposite sides of each groove, the iiXed jaw and sleeve, said sleeve having openings in the sides, plates arranged in said openings, eaeh plate being grooved longitudinally and provided with ratchet-teeth upon its inner face, springs for holding the plates in the openings in the sleeve, levers adapted to slide in the grooves, each pair of levers being connected at their rear ends, all of said parts being arranged and adapted to operate substantially as described.
