*PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN J. QUINLAN, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO UNITED y STATES MANUFACTURING COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF MAINE.
i WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 728,471.10, dated May 19, 1903.
Application filed January 19, 1903. Serial No. 139,643. (No model.) i
T all whom t may con/cern.- K
t Be it known that I, JOHN J. QUINLAN,a citizen of the United States, residing vat Boston, in the county of Suffolk andv Statev of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and Ido here# by declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which Io it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to wrenches; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a front view of the Wrench with the handle cover-plate removed. Fig. 2 is aside view of the wrench.
vA is the handle of the wrench, which is secured tothe shank B, which has a stationary zo jaw b at its end.
- C is a slidable jaw provided with sockets c, f
D by means of springs G, arranged between the lugs g at the ends of the chamber f and lugs g at the ends of the rack.
H represents guide-pins for the rack. The lugs g have holes which slide over the guidepins, and the guide-pins pass through the lugs gand through the springs and are se- 4o cured in any approved manner.
I is a cam-wheel arranged at the back of the rack in a notch i in the shank, withits periphery projecting through slots in the handle and in its cover -plate ai'. The coverplate a may be dispensed withaltogether, if desired, or it" maybe formed integral with the handle. The cam-wheel is provided with ashaft i', which is journaled in a hole in the shank B. When thei carn-wheel is partially 5o revolved from the position shown in Fig. l by means of the thumb and fingers, it presses the rack into engagement with the serrated locking-bar D and grips the locking-bar sition.
against the abutment e, so that the slidable jaw C is locked to the shank and cannot be slid longitudinally. When the locking-bar Ais released from the retractable bar F by the .action of the springs or by being retracted in one hand, which is sometimes convenient.`
What I claim is- 1. In a wrench, the combination, with a shank having a jaw, and a handle provided with an abutment; of a jaw slidable on the said shank, alocking-bar pivoted at one end tothe saidfslidable jaw and arranged between-the said shank and abutment, a retractable bar for engaging with the said locking-bar, and means for operating the said retractable bar, substantially as set forth.
2. In a wrench, the combination, with a shank having a jaw, and a handle provided with an abutment;v of a jaw slidable on the said shank and provided with a lockingbar which slides between the said shank and abutment, a retractable bar for engaging with the said shank, springs for retracting the said bar, and a revoluble cam operating to press the said bar into engagement with the said locking-bar, substantially'as set forth.
3. In aA wrench, the combination, with a shank having a jaw and having also a chamber provided'with lugs at its ends, and a handle provided with an abutment opposite said chamber; of a jaw slidable on the said shank and provided with a locking-bar which slides between the said shank and abutment, a re.
tractable bar arranged in said chamber and having lugs at its ends opposite the aforesaid lugs, retracting-sprngsv arranged between the opposed lugs, and means for pressing the said bar'into engagement with the said locking-bar, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I aftix'my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN J. QUINLAN. Witnesses:
TERESA L. OcHs, FREDERICK K. DAGGETT.
