PAD-HOLDER.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, MONROE G. WVHIT EY, of W yanet, in the county of Bureau and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Pad-Holder, of which the following is a'full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to improvements in devices for holding ink-pads, and especially to improvements in devices for holding such pads as are distributed by the Post-Oflice Department to the several post-offices of the country.

To keep the pads in good working order, it is desirable to have them covered, so as to prevent too rapid evaporation of moisture and also to prevent dirt and dust from accumulating on the pad. These pads are used for inking the canceling-hammers of the department, and as such Work is done rapidly the holder for the pad must be of such anature as not to interfere With the work and to permit the cover to be flipped up or raised by the finger while the cancelinghammer is still in the hand. The device must also be constructed so that it can be held firmly in position and so as to prevent the displacement of the pad.

To these ends my invention consists of a pad-holder the construction and operation of which will be hereinafter fully described and the novel features claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts.

The device has a base 10, which is preferably of wood, so that a screw may be driven through it to fasten it to the bench or table;

- but obviously the material of the pad-holder may be anything suitable for the purpose. In the base is a countersunk recess 11, which I have shown as of circular shape to receive the ordinary pad, (indicated by dotted lines;) but the recess may be shaped to fit a pad of any nature.

On the back part of the plate or base 10 is a raised ledge 12, to which is hinged the lid provided with a packing 17.

The lid is provided with a front flange 15 and with side flanges 16, these being adapted to shut down into contact with the base-plate and form a box-like covering for the pad, and the side flanges 16 are shorter than the lid 13, so that their rear ends will' close against the ledge 12 and make a dust-tight closure. To prevent noise and to exclude dust, the lower edges of the flanges 15 and 16 are preferably The lid 13 is preferably thicker at the back than at its free edge, so that it may swing easily and may have the necessary strength, and at its free edge, and preferably near the right-hand corner, it has a projecting lug or boss 18, so that when the operator wishes to flip the lid quickly he can, while tllehammer is still in his hand, let his little finger engage the under side of the said lug or boss, and so throw up the lid to the position shown in the figure.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that the device is extremely simple, that it affords a good cover for the pad, and that it can be instantly operated without interfering with the work of the operator.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1.
