Description

G; BRINTON. Cover for Barrel.
Fiy. 6'
UNITED STATES PATEN'I' OFFICE,
CALEB BRINTON, OF CHIOAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN COVERS FOR BARRELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 212.350, dated February 18, 1879; application filed October 13, 1877.
To all 'whom it may camera:
Be it known that I, GALEB BRINTON, of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covers for Barrels, Casks, and other vessels; and I hereby declare the following to he a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference heing had to the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l is a bottom view; Fig. 2, a side view; Fig. 3, a sectional View taken on the line x a), Fig. 1; Figs. 4 and 5, detail views; and Fig. 6, a sectional view, similar to Fig. 2, showing a modification.
This invention relates to a transferable cover for barrels, casks, and other vessels, made in two sections, connected together by hinges, one of which sections is adapted to clamp to the side of the vessel, leaving the other free to move upon the hinges; and the improvement consists in the peculiar construction of the clamping device, as hereinafter fully set forth.
In the drawings, A and B are the sections of the lid, hinged together, as shown. C is a metal strip or har, bent into the form of a hook at one end, to clamp into the outer edge of the vessel, and bent to a right angle at the other, where it receives the thumb-screw H.
The thumb-screw bears against a block, G, or other suitable stop, over which the bar C slides freely, lying preferably within a recess formed in the section A.
Thus, even if no further agents were employed, it is obvious that, by placing the lid in position and turning the thumb-screw, the edge of the vessel would be firmly clamped between the hook of the sliding plate C and the block G.
Much greater security is acquired, however, by the employment, in addition, of the plates or lugs D D, projecting from the section A in such position that, as the thumh-screw is turned, they are forced against the inside of the vessel. The greatest firmness is attained when these lugs are so placed as to clamp the side of the vessel at points as near as possible to the hinged edge of the part A.
The block G may be employed to clamp against the inside of the vessel in conjunction with the lugs D D; or it may he removed so far from the inside of the vessel as not to clamp. In the latter case the block G serves merely as a stop for the thumb-'crew.
Aside from the feature of adjustability I deem this arrangement of the parts, whereby the central clamp hooks against the outside of the vessel and thelugs clam p against theinside, to possess great advantages over the nethods and forms hitherto employed and where, as is often the case, the top of the vessel issufficiently yielding to admit of easy compression, as into an ellipse, the device may be adjusted thereto by means of the spring of the vessel itself, when the adjusting features may, of
course, be omitted froni the device.
The adjacent edges of the parts A and B may he covered with cloth or other fleXihle -material so as to produce a close joint; or,
if preferred, the parts may he formed as shown in Fig. 6, where an ogee, E, is formed on their connecting edges, thus preventing dust or dirt from falling through the joint when the cover is closed, and where the pivotal part F of the hinges is placed a short space from the joint of the cover, in order to slide the dust and dirt away from the joint when the part B is raised.
The Construction of my clamping device, it will be seen, afi'ords considerahle range of adjustability, thus permitting the parts readily to adapt themselves to vessels of different szes.
YVhat I claim as new, and desre to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The comhination, upon the part A of the cover, of the sliding clamp C, thnmb-screw H, and block G, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, upon the part A of the cover, of the sliding clamp C, thumb-screw H, hlock or stop G, and lugs D, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
. GALEB BRINTON.
