o. L.1D0ND. PACKAGE FUR OYSTERS, zc.,
Patentd Hl'lllillldlll l .y AUNITED t STATES PATENT Nreiten.'
CHARLES L. POND, OF BUFFALO, new YORK.
`lrvczitiicala FOR OYST'ERS, sto.
SPECIFICATION formi-ag part oflLetters Patent No..265,137, dated september 26, 1882.
l Application filed January 16, 188:2. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Beitknown that LCH/tems L. POND, of the city of Buffalo, in the county of yErie and State of New York, have invented `new and useful Improvements in Packages for Oysters 'and other Perishable Articles, of which the fol lowing is a specification. Y
My invention relates to that class of barrels, tubs, or other vessels in which oysters and other similar perishable articles are packed and transported, and which are provided with a removable head or cover which is taken ott for the purpose ot'` introducing and removing the articles into and from the package.
Myinvention relates more particularly to the construction of this removable head, and has forit-s object to so construct the removable head that it canbe readily applied and removed, and that when applied it is sufficiently tight to prevent the escape otl the contents of the package, and that it can be readily sealed, and that it has no projecting parts which would interfere `with the handling and stowingof the package in transportation. y .y y
Myinvention consists, to that end,of the peculiar construction of the removable head and its locking mechanism, and ofthe peculiar construction of the barrel or package, whereby it is adapted to be used with such removable head, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
1n the accompanying drawings, Figure l is 4a sectional elevation ot an oyster-packe ge provided withmy improvements. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a `vertical section of the upper portion thereof` at right angles to Fig. l, showing the cover in place. Fig. 4 Vis a similar view, showing the cover raised. Fig. 5 is a vertical section, and Fig. 6 a side elevation, of the clamps which are applied to the cover. Fig. 7 is a bottom plan view of the handle of the cover and connecting parts. Fig. Sis a longitudinal vertical section ot' one end of this handle. Fig. 9 is a crosssectionof the opposite end of the handle in line m a', Fig. 7. l
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures.
A represents the body of the barrel, tub, or other vessel, provided with a bottom or lower head, A', which is firmly secured in place.
swelling of the parts.
B B represent the stationary side Vpieces ot' the upper head, which are firmly secured to the inner side of the barrel in any suitable manner. Between the parallel sides ofthe stationary pieces B B is arranged the removable portion ofthe upper head, which consists of two parts, C C', attached together by hinges c, ap-
plied to their lower sides, so that the two parts C C will swing with their lower sides toward each other, as represented in Fig. 4. lhe stationary side pieces, B B, are attached to the barrel by a hoop, d, secured to the` inner side thereof', and a corresponding groove formed in lthe'exterior sides ot the side pieces, B, which tits over the hoop d and secures the side pieces against longitudinal displacement. The side pieces are further secured by nails driven through the barrel into the side pieces. The outer ends of the removable portions C C are provided with similar grooves, d, adapted to fit over those portions of the hoop cl which are not covered by the side pieces. Ilhe remova ble portions C U have their sides provided with a shoulder or offset, e, which rests upon a shoulder or oi'set, e', formed on the contiguou's sides ot' the stationary side pieces, B, sufiicient play being allowed between the adjacent vertical sides of the portions B and C C of the cover to provide `for the warping or The lower side ot' the offset e is provided with a yielding covering, e2, of rubber or other suitable materiahwhereby a tight joint is formed between these parts.
F F represent two clamps pivoted to the side pieces, B, opposite the hingededges ofthe parts C C', and adapted to overlap the adjacent portions of the parts G C and secure these parts in place. Each clamp consists of two wings or lips, f, arranged respectively on the upper and lower sides ot' the cover, and secured to the same by a vertical pivot, j", which turns in the side piece, B. The lipsfare secured to the pivotf, so as to project in the same direc tion. The upper lip,f, is provided with an arm, g, which projects rearward, and which turns upon a plate, g', secured to the upper side of the side piece, B. The plate g is provided witli two upwardly-projecting stops, g2 g3, whereby the movement of the arm g is limited to a quarter-circle, or thereabout. The
IOO
stop g2, against which the arm g rests when the lips of the clamp project over the parts C C of the cover, is perforated, and the arm g is provided with a similar'perforation, so'that the wire of a seal may be drawn through both perforations when the arm g rests against the stopg2,tl1ereby preventingtheclampfrom being turned Without breaking the seal. The upper lip,f, and the arm g are preferably cast in one piece with a hub or sleeve, h, which is secured to the pivot, and whose exterior surface is made hexagonal, or shaped otherwise so as to be readily seized and turned by a suitable wrench.
I represents the handle, which is secured to the upper side of one of the portions G C of the removable part of the cover. This handle is madel removable from the cover, and is shaped to serve, 'when removed, as a'wrench to turn the clamps F. As shown in Fig. 7, the end t' of the handle is provided on its under side with a hexagonal depression which fits on the hexagonal sleeves h of the clamps. This end of the handle I is attached to the cover by a metallic strap, lc, which is secured to the upper side ofthe cover, and which leaves sufficient space between the under side and the upper side of the cover to permit this end of the handle to be inserted under the strap. The cover is preferably provided with depressions for the reception of the ends of the handle to reduce the height to which the handle projects above the cover. The opposite end, i', ofthe handle is inserted under a similar strap, 7c', and bears with its end aga-insta spring, l, seated in an inclined socket, Z, in the cover, whereby thehandle is pressed toward the strap 7:. Upon pressing the handle toward the spring Z until the end z' of the handle is withdrawn from under the strap 7c the end t' of the handle .is released and the handle readily disengaged from the other strap, k', also, when the handle is free to be used as a wrench for turning the clamps F. By inserting the end t" of the handle under the strap lc and compressing the spring l until the end t' of the handle can be passed under the strap k, and then moving the handle in the opposite direction until the end fi is firmly seated under the strap k, the handle is attached to the cover, in which position it is held by the spring l.
The removable portion C C of the cover is readily applied to the barrel or other package 1 when the clamps are properly sealed it is securely locked. Upon breaking` the seals and turning the clamps out of the way the cover G G is readily lifted from its seat.
I claim as my invention- 1. rlhe combination, with the body A, provided on its inner sidewith a hoop, d, ot' thegrooved stationary end pieces, B, hinged cover C C', provided with grooves in its ends, and ledges e c', formed respectively on the stationary end pieces, and hinged cover, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the body A, having end pieces, B, of the hingedv cover C U and clamps F, whereby the hinged cover is secured in place, substantially as set forth.
3. rlhe clamp F. composed of two lips,f, secured to a pivot, j", which is provided with a head, h, adapted to be seized by a wrench, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, with the side pieces, B B, and the hinged cover G Cf, ot' one or more clamps, F, each provided with two lips,f, arranged respectively on the upper and lower sides of the cover, substantially as set forth.
5. The vombinatiomwith the side pieces, B B, and a hinged cover, C O', ofone or more clamps, F, provided with lipsf, adapted to engage over the adjacent portions of the-cover, an arm, g, formed on the clamp,a xed plate,g,provided with stops g2 g3, and means whereby the arm g can be locked to one of the stops, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination, with the cover, of a removable handle, I, straps k lo', and spring l, substantially as set forth.
